ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – After a back-and-forth first half, St. Bonaventure was unable to pull off a fourth quarter comeback attempt against UMass, falling 9-7 on Saturday afternoon at Marra Athletics Complex.
The Bonnies had a balanced scoring attack on the day, with seven different Bonnies finding the back of the net. Jaxon Dillon led the way with one goal and two assists. Isaac Farmer had a season-high 16 saves in goal for St. Bonaventure, while Lad Harper had 12 faceoff wins and picked up nine groundballs.
With five caused turnovers, Owen Tasse set the Bonnies' record for caused turnovers in a season. Tasse now has 27 caused turnovers this season, passing Nick Conklin who previously held the record with 24 in the program's first season at the Division I level in 2019. Tasse also recorded five groundballs in today's contest while posting five or more caused turnovers in a single game for the third time this year.
The Bonnies struck just one minute into the game on a goal from Onenioteko:wa Maracle on the first possession of the contest.
UMass (8-3, 1-2 A-10)Â answered with two goals to take the lead, but Patrick Shanahan found the back of the net with under a minute left in the first quarter to tie the game at 2-2.
The Gorillas added two goals early in the second quarter to take a 4-2 lead. The Bonnies struck back, with goals from Cole Kucinski and Blake Maracle to tie the game at four. UMass scored two quick goals to end the second quarter, heading into halftime with a 6-4 lead.
In the third quarter, UMass began to pull away. The visitors put two goals on the board to take an 8-4 lead into the fourth.
After a scoreless third quarter, St. Bonaventure began to mount a rally.
The Bonnies (4-6, 0-2 A-10) put up three goals in three minutes, cutting the deficit to 8-7 as the defense kept UMass off the board for nearly 13 minutes.
After a game-tying shot attempt from Chris Lawrence was saved by UMass goalie Owen Salanger with four minutes left, UMass marched down the field and scored a key insurance goal from Robbie Granara with 3:20 to play.
In the final minutes, Jaxon Dillon and O. Maracle each put shots on net, but Salanger turned both shots away.
The Bonnies outshot the visitors by a 13-9 margin in the final quarter.
Thomas Bagnall had a hat trick to power the UMass attack while Salanger earned the win in the cage with 11 saves.
UP NEXT
St. Bonaventure will travel to North Carolina next weekend to take on High Point. The game is scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
