GREENVILLE, S.C. – The St. Bonaventure women's lacrosse team posted a commanding performance on Wednesday evening to earn a road victory over Furman, 15-5, led by four goals apiece from seniors
Brooke Piper,
Megan Schillinger and
Rylee Gonzalez.
Â
The Bonnies improved to 4-3 on the season by relying on the most lopsided performance from the draw control circle in program history, handing Furman (2-3) one of just two losses in its past 13 home games. St. Bonaventure set the tone by winning 18 consecutive draw controls and finished the day with a 21-1 advantage in DCs.
Â
Though the Paladins found the game's first score, the Bonnies immediately retaliated with two goals in under a minute, courtesy of Schillinger and Gonzalez.
Â
Furman scored next to tie the game at two goals each, but Schillinger responded on the very next possession with a draw control and an unassisted score to reestablish the visitors' advantage.
Â
Piper then recorded a goal coming from freshman
Gracie Williams' first career assist, and Gonzalez notched her second goal of the game to close out the first quarter with a 5-2 SBU advantage.
Â
The Bonnies caught fire in the second quarter, sparked by freshman
Riley Milligan's free position score in less than two minutes played. The Paladins would momentarily block the visitors' flow of goals, eventually punching in a score of their own with five minutes to go in the half, but Bonaventure then scored on three straight possessions to take a commanding lead.
Â
Immediately following the hosts' score, freshman
Arianna West controlled the draw and sprinted downfield for her first career goal. Junior
Olivia Peeler won the following draw and worked it into the offensive end, where Williams found Schillinger on the cut for a second straight SBU goal and a hat trick for the senior.
The Paladins earned their fifth and final goal in the opening minute of the fourth quarter, but the Bonnies were already well in control. Schillinger, Gonzalez and Piper all added to their hat tricks with fourth-quarter scores to close the book on a 15-5 victory for the visitors.
Schillinger recorded 11 draw controls to go along with her four goals. Piper also won six draw controls along with four groundballs and two caused turnovers. Freshman
Riley Milligan posted three points (2G-1A) as well while Williams handed out two assists.
Van Tassel also had an all-around game with two assists, four groundballs and three caused turnovers.
Â
Sophomore goalie
Judy Mahoney played the full 60 minutes between the posts and made seven saves for a save rate of 58.3 percent.
Â
GAME NOTES
- With her four goals bringing her career total to 147, Brooke Piper has now overtaken Laura Spaulding, '04, for the second-most career goals in program history. She has now scored a hat trick in her last six appearances. The school record belongs to Christine Hanley, '11, who netted 154 goals during her Bona's career.
- The Bonnies dominated in draw controls, securing 21 while the hosts collected just one. The feat marks just the fourth game since 2005 in which the program has recorded 21 or more draw controls with three of those times coming in the past two seasons.Â
- The Paladins were outshot by the Bonnies, 39-20 with 25 of the visitors' attempts going on goal.
