ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – Visiting Dayton silenced the Bonaventure bats in the opener of Sunday's Atlantic 10 doubleheader, then outslugged the Bonnies in the finale to sweep the series by scores of 8-0 and 7-6.
Game 1 – Dayton 8, St. Bonaventure 0
Dayton starter John Delgado kept the Bonnies off balance throughout to score a complete game shutout win in the game that was scheduled for seven innings due to Atlantic 10 Sunday doubleheader rules.
The Flyers posted two runs in the second to set the tone, then a bases loaded walk in the fourth gave Dayton a three-run advantage.
That was more than enough for the lefty Delgado, who limited the Bonnies offense to just two singles with three walks while striking out seven.
Dayton broke the game wide open with five in the seventh.
Tristan Ciampa started for the Bonnies and struck out five while allowing four runs in his six innings of work.
Game 2 – Dayton 7, St. Bonaventure 6
The Flyers carried momentum into the second game of the day by scoring twice in the opening inning.
This time, though, the Bonnies bats came alive with three tallies in their first trip to the plate following an RBI single by Manuel Castro and a run-scoring ground out from Christian LaMothe before Antonio Cordeiro snuck a line drive inside the bag at third for an RBI double and a 3-2 lead, the first of the day for Bona's.
Dayton responded with two in the third to push ahead again, 4-3, but the Bonnies countered in the home half of the frame on RBI hits by LaMothe and Joey Calabretti to move into the lead once more, 5-4.
A Ryan MacDougall home run to lead off the fifth tied the score and the deadlock remained until the Flyers seventh when a Jason Bello triple to the fence in right-center scored two with what turned out to be the game-winning hit.
Chris Hoalcraft brought in a run on a ground out following a hit and two stolen bases by Anthony Fernandez in the bottom of the seventh as the Bonnies got back within a tally.
Bona put runners at first and second with one away in the ninth, but a double play turned by Dayton reliever Niklas Pavia on a ball back to the mound ended the game.
Castro, Cordeiro and Fernandez all had two hits for the Bonnies in game two while LaMothe posted two RBIs.
Enger Paulino (5.0 IP, 8 H, 5 ER, 2 BB, 5 K) started and was followed by Nolan Feidt who struck out three in two innings out of the bullpen. James Capellupo also tossed two scoreless innings.
WRAPPING UP THE SERIES WITH HEAD COACH JASON RATHBUN
"I don't think the pitching staff did a bad job this weekend; we didn't play very good defense and we certainly didn't hit. When you play one of the best hitting teams in the conference, you have to swing the bats as well and we didn't do a very good job of that. Disappointed in our offense this weekend."
