The first female to be inducted into the St. Bonaventure University Hall of Fame was Kathleen M. Lynch in 1991. This was 22 years after the first male athlete was inducted in 1969.



There are 29 Hall of Fame inductees who were once SBU athletes and then went on to have coaching careers either at St. Bonaventure or elsewhere. Those inductees include:

Hugh Jennings, inducted in 1969 for baseball

Frank LoVuolo, inducted in 1969 for football

Charles Major, inducted in 1969 for track and field

John McGraw, inducted in 1969 for baseball

John "Jack" Butler, inducted in 1970 for football

Edward Donovan, inducted in 1970 for basketball

Ted Marachibroda, inducted in 1970 for football

Norman Utecht, inducted in 1971 for football, basketball and baseball

Lawrence Weise, inducted in 1971 for basketball

Fr. Silas Rooney, inducted in 1974 for football and baseball

Ed Don George, inducted in 1975 for wrestling

Bob Lanier, inducted in 1975 for basketball

The only father-son pair in the Hall of Fame is father John J. McNamee, Jr. who founded the swimming program and coached the team and his son Kevin McNamee who coached the swim team later on. John was inducted in 1988, and Kevin was inducted in 2002.


Seven athletes in the Hall of Fame either made it to the Olympics or the Olympic Trials. Those athletes are:

Ed Don George, inducted in 1975 for wrestling, appeared in the 1928 Olympics

Rev. John D. Bell, inducted in 1977 for cross country, appeared in the 1924 Olympics and made it to the 1928 Olympic Trials

Dr. Lewis P. Gregory, inducted in 1977 for cross country, appeared in the 1932 Olympics and 1936 Olympic Trials 

Ken Fairfield, inducted in 1982 for basketball, made it to the 1960 Olympic Trials

Chris Malott, inducted in 2000 for swimming, made it to the 1988 Olympic Trials

Garvin Ferguson, inducted in 2005 for swimming, appeared in the 1988 Olympics

Barry Mungar, inducted in 2005 for basketball, appeared in the 1988 Olympics


The largest amount of athletes to be inducted in the Hall of Fame in one year was 14 athletes in 1969. The least amount was one athlete in 1980.


Seven jerseys have been retired by Hall of Fame inductees. They include:

William "Butts" Butler, inducted in 1969 for basketball, wore jersey #14

Ronald "Whitey" Martin, inducted in 1969 for basketball, wore jersey #34

Kenneth S. Murray, Jr., inducted in 1969 for basketball, wore jersey #13

Samuel E. Stith, inducted in 1969 for basketball, wore jersey #22

Thomas A. Stith, inducted in 1969 for basketball, wore jersey #42

Russell Frederick Crawford, inducted in 1970 for basketball, wore jersey #54

Bob Lanier, inducted in 1975 for basketball, wore jersey #31


Brothers Samuel E. Stith and Thomas A. Stith were both inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1969, both played basketball and both had their jerseys retired.


There have been 28 athletes inducted into the Hall of Fame who were captains or co-captains of their team. Those inductees are:

The longest stretch between Hall of Fame inductees was five years between 1982 and 1987.



Twenty-Two of the Hall of Fame inductees have gone on to professional sports careers after playing as Bonnies. These inductees are:

William "Clete" Kenville, inducted in 1971, played basketball for the Syracuse Nationals and the Fort Wayne/Detroit Pistons

John Gildea, inducted in 1972, played football for the Pittsburgh Pirates and the New York Giants

George Carter, inducted in 1974, played basketball for the Virginia Squires (ABA) and the New York Nets

Bob Lanier, inducted in 1975, played basketball for the Detroit Pistons and the Milwaukee Bucks

Brendan McCann, inducted in 1975, played basketball for the New York Knicks

George V. (Gige) Kenneally, inducted in 1976, played football for the Potsville Maroons, the Boston Braves, the Chicago Cardinals and the Philadelphia Eagles

Essie Hollis, inducted in 1988, played basketball for the New Orleans Jazz and the Detroit Pistons, and overseas in Spain and Italy

Matt Gantt, inducted in 1990, played basketball overseas

Glenn Hagan, inducted in 1992, played basketball for the Detroit Pistons

Mark Jones, inducted in 1995, played basketball for the New Jersey Nets

David Vanterpool, inducted in 2006, played basketball in the NBA for the Washington Wizards, the Detroit Pistons and the New Jersey Nets, and overseas in China, Italy and Russia; also a pro scout with the Oklahoma City Thunder and assistant coach for the Portland Trail Blazers

Peter Van Passen, inducted in 2011, played basketball for the BC Telent Oostende(Belgium), Melilla Baloncesto (Spain), Den Helder Kings (Netherlands), ABC Amsterdam (Netherlands), Eiffel Towers Den Bosch (Netherlands) and Belfius Mons-Hainaut (Belgium)


Four inductees in the Hall of Fame either started off as SBU athletes or coaches and then became SBU professors or were SBU professors while coaching a team. Those inductees include:

Carroll "Mike" Reilly, inducted in 1969 as a basketball and football coach, was also an SBU math instructor

Fred D. Handler, inducted in 1992 as a baseball and basketball coach, was also chair of the physical education department

Dr. Pat Panzarella, inducted in 2003 as a tennis coach, was also a professor of English for 37 years

Enrique Barrera, inducted in 2008 as a soccer player and coach, also a professor of modern languages for 42 years


All athletics teams are represented in the St. Bonaventure University Hall of Fame.

 Dr. Lewis P. Gregory recorded two different world records. One was at the age of 76, where he broke the record of a marathon by a hour and eight minutes. The other one occured at age 75.
