A blend of talent, experience and a blue-collar work ethic makes LARRY SUDBROOK one of the most successful and respected head coaches in the Atlantic 10 Conference.
Sudbrook's main goals each year for his program remain unchanged: provide his student-athletes with the best possible experience and field teams that challenge for the Atlantic 10 championship. Over his three-plus decades at St. Bonaventure, Sudbrook has built a program that consistently meets those goals.
A three-time A-10 Coach of the Year recipient, Sudbrook has accumulated over 700 wins over his illustrious coaching career, making him far and away St. Bonaventure’s all-time winningest coach. With a win over UMass on April 1, 2018, he scored his 698th career win to become the all-time leader in wins as a member of the Atlantic 10. Later in the year, he secured another career milestone with win No. 700.
Overall, Sudbrook has led the Bonnies to 14 winning seasons, nine berths in the Atlantic 10 Tournament, two Atlantic 10 East division championships and an A-10 Tournament title in 2004. St. Bonaventure finished third or better in the East in eight of the 10 years in which the A-10 played with two divisions.
Following the 2021 season, outfielder Tyler Kelder became the 44th All-Atlantic 10 selection under Sudbrook's watch. In 2019, outfielder Sam Fuller was selected as a CoSIDA Google Cloud Academic All-American as well, the fourth in program history. When outfielder Brendyn Stillman earned Second Team All-America honors from Collegiate Baseball Newspaper in 2020 after leading the nation in batting average, it marked the fourth straight season the Bonnies finished with an All-American selection.
In 2021, Kelder ranked second in the A-10 in slugging (.696) and top-30 nationally in home runs per game while fifth-year senior pitcher Donovan Moffat ranked sixth in the country with five complete games.
The 2017 season was one to remember for Sudbrook and the Bonnies as he captured his third Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year honor after leading Bona to 26 victories and a 15-8 mark in the A-10. SBU took third in the A-10 standings, despite being picked ninth in preseason, and had a record six players earn All-Atlantic 10 honors led by junior Aaron Phillips who received Atlantic 10 Pitcher of the Year and ABCA All-America accolades after going 9-1 with a 2.77 ERA during the season. Shortstop Cole Peterson was selected All-Atlantic 10 First Team while third baseman David Hollins was a second team selection. Freshmen Casey Vincent and Donovan Moffat were named to the All-Rookie Team while senior T.J. Baker earned a nod on the All-Academic Team as the club also shined again in the classroom with a team GPA of 3.27. During the year Sudbrook notched another memorable career milestone in picking up his 300th Atlantic 10 win.
Following the 2017 season, Phillips was drafted in the ninth round of the Major League Baseball Draft by the San Francisco Giants, the highest Bona draft pick in program history, and Peterson earned a selection in the 13th round by the Detroit Tigers to give St. Bonaventure four MLB Draft selections during a three-year span.
Sudbrook led the Bonnies to 26 victories in 2016 and under his watch Bona finished among the nation's top 10 in ERA. Sophomore starting pitcher Brandon Schlimm and sophomore shortstop Cole Peterson each earned All-Atlantic 10 honors following the season. The year saw four Bonnies pitchers - Schlimm, Connor Grey, Reid Van Woert and Aaron Phillips - all finish among the top 10 in the A-10 ERA rankings while Tyler Walter hit .325 to rank ninth in the league. Following the season, Grey was selected in the 20th round of the Major League Baseball Draft by the Arizona Diamondbacks, giving the Bonnies a player selected in the draft for the second straight season. Pitcher Steven Klimek was taken in the 33rd round of the 2015 MLB Draft by the Baltimore Orioles.
The start of the 2010 season marked an end of a decade in which the Bonnies were one of the conference’s premiere teams under Sudbrook. St. Bonaventure accumulated 264 wins over the 10-year span, including 10 consecutive years of 20 or more wins and eight winning seasons. The program’s seven winning seasons in A-10 regular season play were the second-most in the league, while their six A-10 postseason appearances ranked third among the conference’s 14 teams.
From 2006-08, Sudbrook guided St. Bonaventure to three-year program records of 83 wins and 47 Atlantic 10 victories. The Brown and White advanced to the A-10 Tournament in each of those three seasons, making them one of just three A-10 teams to accomplish the feat. Win No. 500 was extra special for Sudbrook, as his youngest son Cory picked up the save in the Bonnies 4-2 win over La Salle on May 5, 2008.
In 2006 and 2007, senior Brian Pellegrini became only the second player in conference history to capture consecutive Atlantic 10 Player of the Year honors. Over his career, Pellegrini set four program single-season records and six career records. Thanks to his development during his four years under Sudbrook, the Willoughby, Ohio native became the first All-American in program history and was selected in the 12th Round of the Major League Baseball Draft by the Houston Astros.
Sudbrook's remarkable run of achievements continued in the 2006 campaign. After he led the Bonnies to a school record 18 Atlantic 10 wins (18-8) and a second place finish in the first year of the 14-team conference, Sudbrook was voted the Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year by his peers. The Bonnies finished 29-21 overall and were runners-up in the A-10 Tournament. 
The 2004 season was the most successful year in school history. Sudbrook guided a young Bona club to the school's first Atlantic 10 Championship and first NCAA Tournament berth. Seeded fourth out of six teams in the A-10 Championship, the Bonnies rattled off four consecutive victories, including a pair over top-seeded Rhode Island. The finale was a 3-2 decision over Rhode Island in the championship game. St. Bonaventure went on to play No. 3 Miami to a hard-fought 6-3 decision on the Hurricanes' home field in the NCAA Regionals. The Bonnies finished 29-22 overall with a 14-7 clip in the A-10. Among the players Sudbrook helped develop were All-Conference shortstop Eric Wilson, who graduated in 2004, and outfielder/pitcher Brian Pellegrini, who was named a Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American by Collegiate Baseball, as well as a second team All-Conference choice.
In 2002, Sudbrook guided St. Bonaventure to the A-10 East crown and a school record 30 overall wins and a then-record 16 conference victories. Three of his players, outfielder Mike Rapacioli, pitcher Kyle Johnson and infielder Mike Sedor, were named to the All-Conference team.
Sudbrook was named Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year in 2000 after leading the Bonnies to their first A-10 East Division Championship and 13 conference wins. The Bonnies also qualified for the A-10 Tournament in 1994 and 1995.
Sudbrook's players also achieve off the field, as the Brown and White have placed 43 student-athletes on the A-10 Academic All-Conference team. In 2008, senior Randy Moley became just the second player in A-10 history to win the conference Student-Athlete of the Year award in back-to-back seasons (‘07 & ‘08). Moley was also a three-time ESPN The Magazine All-District honoree and in 2008 and made the Academic All-America first team. In 2000, junior shortstop Mark Evers and senior outfielder Jason Milleisen were named GTE/CoSIDA Academic All-Americans – the first in program history. Shortstop Eric Wilson was named to the Academic All-District team in 2002, 2003 and 2004. Outfielder Sam Fuller was an Academic All-America pick as both a junior and a senior, taking Third Team honors in 2018 before being named to the First Team in 2019.
Prior to coming to St. Bonaventure, Sudbrook guided Fairport (Ohio) High School to four sectional titles in five seasons. As a player, he was a two-year letterman at Lakeland (Ohio) Community College before graduating from Kent State University.
Sudbrook and his wife, Beverly, have two sons, Shane and Cory. Shane was a four-year letter-winner at St. Bonaventure and followed his father’s footsteps as an assistant coach for three seasons. The Sudbrooks reside in Bradford, Pa.
