Bob Macfarlane enters his 15th year in charge of both the men’s and women’s running programs in 2025, and during that time the St. Bonaventure graduate has made vast improvements to both squads. Since his return to St. Bonaventure in 2010, both teams have enjoyed successful seasons and continue to improve year after year.
Nine of the Bonnies' top-10 all-time women's individual 5K cross country times have been turned in since Macfarlane took over the program while all of the women's top-10 6K marks have come under his watch. On the men's side, all of the program's top-10 5K and nine of the top-10 8K times have been set during his tenure.
A total of nine Bonnies achieved PRs at the 2023 Atlantic 10 Outdoor Track Championships on the men's team while on the women's side, the Bonnies set six program records and 19 student-athletes re-wrote the school's individual top-10s a total of 29 times in nine separate events during the 2023 indoor campaign.
During his time at the helm of the program, Macfarlane has coached two-time All-Conference runner Kerry Caher and guided the women's team to their first-ever Little Three Invitational championship in school history. He also led the women's team to a top-10 finish at the Paul Short Invitational which was the best finish in program history.
Macfarlane has grown the program not only in success but in number as well - he took over a pair of teams that had nine combined runners on the men's and women's teams, but over 40 runners have made up the program each season following the addition of men's and women's track teams in 2016.
In 2019, Bona's men's cross country team earned victory in Erie's Race in the Park while freshman Logan Caruso became the program's first student-athlete to take multiple Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week honors in the same season. Following the shortened 2020-21 season, sophomore Darion Gregory earned a spot on the Atlantic 10 All-Academic Team for his efforts in competition and the classroom. During the 2021-22 season, Gregory was named Academic All-District while freshman Clay Peets set a program record by being named Atlantic 10 Cross Country Rookie of the Week three times. Gregory finished his career with A-10 All-Academic honors in 2022-23 for cross country, indoor and outdoor track, becoming the first athlete in program history to do so, while Peets was named an A-10 Performer of the Week in cross country.
Academically, the Bonnies have enjoyed a wealth of success during MacFarlane's tenure. The men's cross country team was honored by the NCAA in Spring 2016 after ranking in the top 10 percent of the nation in Academic Progress Rate (APR) for the previous year. In Spring 2017, the NCAA honored the women's cross country program for ranking in the top 10 percent of the nation in APR. The women's team took the NCAA APR honors again in Spring 2019. In 2023, Bonnies men's cross country owned a 997 APR, tied for the best on campus. Since 2012, Bonnies men's cross country has recorded a score of 994 or better all but one year, including three perfect scores.
In 2017, MacFarlane guided the rebirth of the men's and women's track programs as the Bonnies officially competed in track for the first time since 1990. The Bonnies added indoor track to their program in 2020.
