St. Bonaventure University Vice President and Director of Athletics Bob Beretta has announced the hiring of Camden Decker as the fifth head coach in the history of the Bonnies softball program July 10, 2025.
“Cam brings incredible expertise on both sides of the ball,” Beretta said. “He is a proven winner with an impressive track record of success. Every program he has been associated with has improved during his time on staff.”
Decker comes to St. Bonaventure after spending the last three seasons as an assistant coach at Troy where he helped guide the Trojans to winning campaigns in all three seasons, posting 30 or more wins in each season.
He helped the Trojans to 100 total victories during his time in Alabama.
“I am deeply honored to be named Head Softball Coach at St. Bonaventure. I extend my heartfelt gratitude to the university, President Dr. Jeff Gingerich, Athletic Director Bob Beretta, Executive Deputy Director of Athletics/Senior Women’s Administrator Barb Questa, Sr. Associate Athletic Director Alexis Watson, and the whole athletic department for entrusting me with this incredible opportunity. I’m excited to lead our talented student-athletes, build on the program’s proud legacy, and foster a culture of excellence, teamwork, and growth. Together, we’ll strive for success on and off the field, representing St. Bonaventure with pride. Thank you for this privilege! I’m ready to hit the ground running!"
He directed three Sun Belt All-Conference pitchers and helped Troy to ranked victories over No. 23 Texas State and No. 17 Louisiana, finishing the season with a 34-22 overall record during the 2024 campaign.
Prior to Troy, Decker spent four seasons as an assistant coach at Kennesaw State where he helped the Owls to their first-ever NCAA Regional win over Auburn in 2021.
He also developed one of the top pitchers in the ASUN at Kennesaw State, earning ASUN Rookie of the Year honors as well as All-Conference First Team and All-Rookie Team selections in the circle.
Overall, he helped Kennesaw State to 97 wins across four seasons, including a historic 21-4 start to the pandemic-shortened 2020 season.
He also has made coaching stops at Delaware (2018), UT Arlington (2015-17) and Arkansas (2014).
While with UT Arlington, Decker helped the Mavs to 20 or more wins in each of the three seasons.
Decker previously spent time as an assistant at the Doug Gillis International Fastpitch Institute, where he helped in the instruction of pitching staffs at Evansville University and the University of Missouri. Gillis served as Kennesaw State's pitching coach in 2017 and 2018 and is considered to be one of the best pitching coaches in college softball.
Prior to his coaching days, Decker was a two-year baseball captain at Waubonsee Community College before transferring to Trinity International University, where he was a member of the baseball team and volunteer assistant with the softball squad.
Decker, a former member of the USA Men's Fastpitch National Team, earned his bachelor's degree from Trinity International in May of 2013.
“Cam is highly respected amongst his peers as an elite pitching instructor,” Beretta added. “He possesses vast knowledge, skills and experience, along with a keen ability to identify and recruit talent. Those traits make him an excellent fit for our program. We are thrilled to welcome Cam, Mallary, Maevy and Faerren to the Bona Athletics Family, and are excited to witness the future growth of St. Bonaventure Softball under Cam’s leadership.”
