Bonnies fall to Duquesne in season opener

PITTSBURGH, Pa.. - The St. Bonaventure men's soccer team opened its 2005 campaign with a 2-0 loss to Duquesne Friday night at Arthur J. Rooney Athletic Field. The contest does not count towards conference play for either the Bonnies or the Dukes.

Duquesne got on the board in the 11th minute when Travis Mackenzie scored off a pass from Steve Mellor. Mellor added an insurance goal less than four minutes later, taking a pass from Tom Sochacki.

St. Bonaventure junior forward Kevin Omokhua led the team with four of the Bonnies eight shots. The Dukes had 17 shots in the game.

Duquesne keeper Zach Varga recorded three saves, while Bona sophomore Ken Lish had five saves.

St. Bonaventure coach Mel Mahler said, "It was obviously not the result we wanted, but we walked away encouraged about us as a team."

The loss drops the Bonnies to 0-1 on the season, while the Dukes improve to 1-0.

St. Bonaventure hosts Canisius in its home opener on Wednesday, Sept. 7 at McGraw-Jennings Field. Kickoff is slated for 4 p.m.
