Men's soccer falls to Holy Cross in offensive showdown, 5-3

WORCESTER, Mass. - The St. Bonaventure men's soccer team fell to Holy Cross, 5-3, in a high-scoring affair on Friday night at Linda Johnson Smith Stadium.

The loss is the Bonnies' fourth straight, dropping their record to 0-4-0 while Holy Cross remained undefeated at 3-0-0.

Junior forward Josh Henderson gave St. Bonaventure an early 1-0 lead when he took a crossing pass from Nick Lopez and beat Crusader goalkeeper Keith Bauer with a shot to the lower left corner in the 3rd minute for his second goal in as many games.

However, Holy Cross went on to score three unanswered goals in the next 24 minutes to put the Bonnies in a 3-1 hole.

Junior forward Nikola Vasilev scored in the 31st minute to send the Bonnies into halftime trailing by one, 3-2, but Holy Cross did not waste any time after the break as Felipe Castrillon netted the Crusaders fourth goal just 4:53 into the second half.

The Bonnies offense persisted and, in the 77th minute, junior midfielder Phil Amahazion's goal brought St. Bonaventure back within one at 4-3, but Holy Cross scored its fifth and final goal in the 81st minute to put the game out of the Bonnies' reach.

Bona goalkeeper Ben Nida did not register a save in the contest, while Bauer made four stops for Holy Cross. St. Bonaventure out-shot the Crusaders 12-10 on the night.

The Bonnies return to action in the UMass Invitational Tournament on Sunday, when the face-off with Massachusetts at 1 p.m. in Amherst.
