COLUMBUS, Ohio -
The St. Bonaventure lacrosse team played Ohio State tough, but was eventually overwhelmed by the Buckeye offense in a 16-9 defeat Sunday afternoon at the Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.
St. Bonaventure drops to 0-2 on the young season after the loss, while Ohio State improves to 3-1 with the win.
Leading the way for the Brown and White offensively was freshman Samantha Cavallaro who scored three goals in the game. Junior Molly Hastrich had her second-straight solid performance, tallying four points on two goals and two assists for the day. Freshman Danielle Drabin also had an efficient day for the Bonnies, scoring two goals on just three shots for the game.
Getting her second-straight start in net for the Brown and White was junior Tori Waheibi. Waheibi was bombarded with 37 shots by the Ohio State offense and managed to save 21 of them. The Rochester, N.Y., product also collected a game-high nine ground balls in the defeat, dropping her record to 0-2 on the season.
The Buckeyes led in just about every major statistical category. They outshot the Bonnies 44-23 for the game, including a 37-18 edge in shots on goal. Ohio State won the turnover battle, forcing the Brown and White into 25 turnovers while committing just 16 of its own.
The game as a whole, was a tale of two half's. St. Bonaventure let Ohio State score the first four goals of the game, but did not lose its composure. The Bonnies would begin to claw their way back into the game after a goal on a free position shot by sophomore Christine Hanley made the score 5-2 Ohio State with 10:27 left in the first half.
The Brown and White would continue to storm their way back, receiving two goals in the last 1:38 of the first half by Hastrich and Drabin to make the score 6-4 Ohio State going into intermission.
St. Bonaventure would cut the Buckeye lead down to just one after Drabin converted a free position shot at the start of the second half to make the score 6-5 Ohio State with 29:23 left in the game.
After letting St. Bonaventure hang around and come all the way back into the game, Ohio State decided to turn it on in the second half. After Drabin's goal made the score 6-5, the Buckeyes rattled off six-straight goals over the next nine minutes of play to put the game out of reach. Alayna Markword scored three goals during the Buckeyes scoring run, including the last tally to make the score 12-5 Ohio State with just 21:58 remaining.
The Brown and White tried to make a game of it late receiving goals from Hastrich and Cavallaro to make the score 13-9 Ohio State, but the Buckeyes would score the final three goals of the game to put the visitors away.
Offensively, Ohio State was led by Markword who had six points in four goals and two assists in the victory. Junior Kelly Haggerty was right behind her notching five points for the game on four goals and one assist.
Kristen Gilwee got the start in net for the Buckeyes and picked up the win by making nine saves in the contest.
St. Bonaventure will be back in action on Thursday, March 5, when they travel to St. Petersburg, Florida to take on Presbyterian. Game time is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
