PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The men's soccer team (4-5-1) begins Atlantic 10 Conference play Friday, traveling to the Steel City to face Duquesne (3-5-1) in a 7 p.m. start from Arthur J. Rooney Athletic Field.
The Bonnies commence A-10 action on the heels of a two-game undefeated streak, extended after a 1-1 double-overtime tie with Cornell Sept. 26. After giving up a Conor Goepel goal in the 40th minute, the Brown and White trailed until senior forward Joshua Gonsalves scored off an assist by sophomore midfielder Brad Vanino in the 88th minute to tie the game. Freshman goalie Bobby Diaz led a solid defensive effort by making five saves in 110 minutes of play.
Sophomore midfielder James Reed's 11 points (five goals, one assist) continue to pace both the Bonnies and the A-10, despite being held scoreless since a goal in the Bonnies' 2-1 victory over Cleveland State Sept. 21. Sophomore forward Emmett O'Connor leads the A-10 with five assists, tallying seven points (one goal) thus far.
Duquesne enters Friday's game in the midst of a long skid, losing five of its last six games. The lone win in that span came via a 2-0 home defeat of the University at Buffalo Sept. 25. However, the Dukes are unbeaten on their home turf, boasting a 3-0-1 record to this point of the season.
Sophomore forward Simon Gomez leads the Dukes with 10 points (four goals, two assists), placing him in a tie for second in the A-10. Gomez gets plenty of scoring opportunities, leading the conference with 3.44 shots per game. Junior defender Adam Clement supports the Dukes' attack with six points this season (two goals, two assists).
Following Friday's tilt, the Bonnies won't return to action until an Oct. 14 road meeting with No. 14 (NSCAA/Continental Tire) Charlotte at 7 p.m.
