Game Notes: St. Bonaventure | UCF | A-10
SBU Press Clippings
The Matchup
St. Bonaventure (16-14) travels to Central Florida (19-11) for the first round of the 2011 College Basketball Invitational presented by Zebra Pen. The game is the first meeting between the two schools, who are each making their first appearance in the CBI.
What's On the Line
The Winnner of the game advances to the quarterfinals to face the winner of the Miami (Ohio) and Rhode Island contest. St. Bonaventure has not won a postseason tournament game since a 75-70 win over Southern Mississippi in the 1995 NIT.
Last Time Out
La Salle's Steve Weingarten made a 3-pointer with 32 seconds left in double overtime to help the 10th-seeded Explorers (15-17) escape with a 75-73 victory over No. 7 seed St. Bonaventure (16-14) in the opening round of the Atlantic 10 Championship Tuesday night at the Reilly Center. Weingarten's 3 in 2OT turned a two-point St. Bonaventure lead into an advantage for the Explorers, who trailed by as many as seven with under a minute to go in the first overtime session. Bonnies' forward Da'Quan Cook missed a pair of free throws with three seconds left in the game after being fouled grabbing an offensive rebound. Andrew Nicholson tallied 30 points and 13 rebounds, recording the highest-ever total by a St. Bonaventure player in the Atlantic 10 Championship in both categories.
Scouting the Knights
UCF started the year 14-0 (wins over No. 18 Florida, Princeton, Miami (Fla.), Marshall, UMass) and ascended to the No. 19 spot in the AP Top 25 poll (Jan. 3), before losing eight straight Conference USA games. The Knights rallied to win five of their last seven down the stretch to earn the No. 7 seed in the C-USA tournament, before falling to East Carloina in the opening round. Marcus Jordan, son of basketball legend Michael Jordan, leads the team in scoring at 15.6 points per game while Keith Clanton chips in with 14.0 points and a team-leading 8.1 rebounds. UCF's offense finished middle-of-the-pack in C-USA at 69.4 points per game but the defense clamped down to allow just 62.6 ppg — good for third in the league — with teams shooting just 40.2 percent from the floor, second only to UTEP.
Head Coach: Donnie Jones
Donnies Jones is in his first season at Central Florida after spending the previous three years at Marshall, where he quickly turned around the Thundering Herd program. Jones was named Marshall's head coach in 2007. He inherited a program that had struggled since joining Conference USA in 2005, and quickly changed the culture surrounding the Herd. Less than three years later, Jones led the Herd to one of the top campaigns in program history. In 2009-10, Marshall went 24-10 and advanced to the second round of the CollegeInsider.com Tournament. The appearance was the first trip to the postseason in 22 years for the school. Prior to taking the helm at Marshall, Jones served for 11 years as an assistant coach at Florida, helping the program claim a pair of national titles and make three trips to the Final Four. Working as an assistant under Billy Donovan from 1996-07, Jones helped Florida win back-to-back national championships in 2006 and 2007.
Series Snapshot
This is the first-ever meeting between Central Flrodia and St. Bonaventure on the hardwood.
Almost Automatic
Over his last 10 games, Junior Andrew Nicholson is shooting a ridiculous 63.4 percent from the field (90-142) and sophomore Demitrius Conger isn't far behind at 63.0 percent (34-54). Conger is also converting from 3-point range at a 54.2 percent clip (13-24).
First Postseason Berth
For the Bonnies, the CBI marks the first postseason tournament appearance since an NIT selection in 2001-02. Overall, SBU has 22 previous postseason tournament appearances, including 15 in the NIT and five in the NCAA Championship.
A-10 in the CBI
A current member of the Atlantic 10 has been selected in every year of the tournament's three-year history. Saint Louis University advanced to the 2010 Championship Series against eventual champion Virginia Commonwealth, while Duquesne (2010), George Washington (2010) and Richmond (2008, 2009) have also made appearances in the CBI. SBU, Duquesne and Rhode Island are this year's A-10 representatives.
Bonnies' Best Ever
Andrew Nicholson had one of his best games in Bona uniform in the 2OT loss to La Salle. He tallied 30 points and 13 rebounds, recording the highest-ever totals by a St. Bonaventure player in the Atlantic 10 Championship in both categories.
First Team Honors
Andrew Nicholson has been named to the Atlantic 10 All-Conference First Team, becoming the first SBU player to claim that honor since Marques Green in 2002-03. Nicholson was the Conference Rookie of the Year as a freshman and gained Second Team distinction in 2009-10.
Chasing .500
After recording a 15-15 mark in 2008-09, SBU fell one game short of .500 last season by booking a 15-16 record. This year however, SBU is guaranteed a winning record. St. Bonaventure enjoyed a streak of 28 consecutive seasons of .500-or-better basketball from 1956-57 to 1983-84, but has had just nine such seasons in the last 26. SBU now has 64 seasons at or above .500 in 90 years.
He's Heating Up
If the season ended today, sophomore swingman Demitrius Conger's 3FG% of 41.9 percent (35-83) would rank sixth all-time behind Tyler Relph's 42.6 in 2007-08.
Uncharted Territory
Mark Schmidt is in his 10th season as a head coach, and one more victory would tie the record for wins by a Schmidt-coached team, as his Robert Morris squad was 17-11 in his final season in Pittsburgh.
Lone Senior
The Bonnies honored lone senior Ogo Adegboye prior to the regular-season finale against Rhode Island. A two-year starter who transferred in from Lamar Community College, Adegboye was selected as a team captain and was accompanied by his mother, Tokunbo, who flew in from Nigeria. It marked the first time that Adegboye's mother and father (Alex) got to see him play in the United States.
Possession is Nine-Tenths
The Bonnies made 20 turnovers in the 70-64 loss to Duquesne, marking the fifth time this season that SBU has turned it over 20 or more times. In those games, the Bonnies are 1-4 with the only win being a triple OT triumph against Charlotte.
They Were Due
Saint Joseph's shot an astounding 61.5 percent from the field, including 11-of-17 from 3-point range, in its 79-65 defeat of St. Bonaventure. The Hawks, who entered the game as the Atlantic 10's worst FG% percentage team (40.2 percent), posted the best FG% performance against the Bonnies since Xavier shot 64.2 percent (34-53) in a 99-66 victory at the Reilly Center Jan. 24, 2007.
Building the Bench
Through the first 13 games of the season, the Bonnies got little production from the bench, failing to score in double figures in any game. Over the past 17 games, however, SBU has enjoyed 10 or more points off the bench in all but six contests, including a season-high 28 points against UMass.
Lock it Up
The Bonnies are 9-2 when holding opponents under 40% from the field this season and 6-11 when the opposition is converting at 40% or better. SBU has won its last five when limiting the opponent to under 40 percent dating back to a loss at Rhode Island in which the Rams were 21-of-59 (.356) from the field.
Oh, We're Halfway There
So far this season, the Bonnies are 12-3 when leading at the half. The setbacks when ahead at the break came in back-to-back contests at Rhode Island and versus Xavier and in the opening round of the A-10 Championship against La Salle. St. Bonaventure is just 4-11 when trailing at halftime.
We Go as 'O' GOes
Senior captain Ogo Adegboye has 13 games this season with 13 or more points. St. Bonaventure is 11-2 so far this season when he goes for 13+; SBU has won seven of its last eight when Adegboye reaches that number.
Reaching for #400
The victory over Rhode Island was a landmark one for St. Bonaventure. With a 390-180 mark in the RC since its construction in 1966, SBU holds a 10-4 at home this season – making the 74-68 win over Rhody No. 400 all time.
More Than Just Nicholson
Entering the season, coach Mark Schmidt commented that players other than Nicholson would have to step up for the Bonnies to find success. True to form, each of the other four starters have netted career highs including: Michael Davenport (28 pts vs. Rhode Island), Ogo Adegboye (29 vs. Saint Louis), Demitrius Conger (22 pts. 14 rebs. vs. Cornell) and Da'Quan Cook (21 pts. 13 rebs. vs. Binghamton). Off the bench, Matthew Wright got into the act against GW, pouring in a career-high 18 on 6-of-7 from the field and Marquise Simmons upped his best to 18 points against La Salle. Fellow reserve Brett Roseboro scored a personal-best 12 points in the win over Fordham.
Welcome Back Conger
After being held scoreless against Saint Louis, talented sophomore Demitrius Conger turned in an impressive stat line against Richmond. The Brooklyn native notched 17 points, made all five free throws, hit 2-of-3 from beyond the arc and grabbed four rebounds in 37 minutes of work. He followed that up with 18 points, six assists (tying a career-high), and a personal-best five steals in the Bonnies 82-63 defeat of Fordham.
Found His Stroke
Senior G Ogo Adegboye – a career 65.9 percent free throw shooter –made 12 consecutive free throws in the three-game span from Saint Louis to Fordham, a streak that came to an end at the 13:04 mark of the second half against the Rams. Adegboye was a perfect 9-for-9 from the stripe against Saint Louis and made both attempts against Richmond. The senior also hit all six of his tries at Duquesne.
Toeing the Line
Nicholson is the first player in school history to shoot 200+ free throws in a season. He currently has 226, 38 more than second place (J.R. Bremer).
Strong to the Finish
Regardless of what has happened in the first half of games – foul trouble, double teams, etc. – Andrew Nicholson has managed to find a rhythm in the second half of games this season. In his games against Saint Louis and Richmond, Andrew Nicholson got going in the second half after slow starts. He was 0-for-2 from the floor with just two points in the opening half versus the Billikens, but came alive for 20 points on 8-of-11 in the second. The Mississauga native repeated the feat against Richmond, booking 14 of his 16 points and eight of his 11 boards in the last frame and against Duquesne scored all of his 12 in the final 20 minutes after sitting out with foul trouble.
Talk About High-Percentage!
In the second half against Saint Louis, the Bonnies shot a blistering 73.1 percent (17-23) as a team, including a perfect 3-of-3 from behind the arc. Only four players (Adegboye, Nicholson, Davenport, Cook) attempted a shot. St. Bonaventure – which made 10 of its first 12 shots to start the half - also made good on 14 of 17 free throws. Overall, SBU has shot over 50 percent from the floor in each of its last four games and six of its last seven.
Cook, He's a Monster
Redshirt junior Da'Quan Cook tied his career-high 21 points on 8-of-10 shooting from the floor against Saint Louis. The forward's previous high came at Binghamton, a game in which Cook also scored 21 points and grabbed a career-high 13 rebounds.
Ahead of Schedule?
Now in his fourth season at the helm of the Bonnies, head coach Mark Schmidt is ahead of schedule with respect to his previous head coaching stint at Robert Morris. During his third and fourth season at RMU, Schmidt posted back-to-back seasons with the same number of wins (14) before guiding the team to a record over .500 (15-14). At St. Bonaventure, Schmidt guided SBU to 15 wins in year two and three, before ensuring a winning season with victory number 16 against Rhode Island in this his fourth Bona campaign. St. Bonaventure had not finished a season over .500 since 2001-02 (17-13).
Pack Mentality
In the win over Saint Louis Feb. 16, three Bonnies scored over 20 points. Senior G Ogo Adegboye led the way with 29 points, followed by Andrew Nicholson's 22(20 in second half) and Da'Quan Cook's 21. It was the first time three players scored 20+ since Feb. 3, 2007 against Duquesne. In that 111-92 loss against the Dukes, Michael Lee and guard Zarryon Fereti each scored 23 points and A.J. Hawkins tallied 20.
More than One Per Minute
After working against double- and triple-teams in the first half, Andrew Nicholson scored 20 of his 22 points in the second half against Saint Louis, much of which came against a single defender. The junior played 19 minutes, but shot 8-of-11 from field and 4-of-5 from the line. He came close to duplicating the feat with a 16-point in 18-minute effort against Fordham, where he was saddled with foul trouble. Against La Salle, Nicholson notched exactly 20 points in 20 second-half minutes – to cap a contest where he started with 10 points in 13 minutes.
An 'Atta-boy' for Adegboye
Senior captain Ogo Adegboye hit six 3-pointers on the way to a career-high 29 points in the victory against Saint Louis. He also erupted to score eight and nine straight points against the Billikens. The senior has eight games with three or more triples this season, including seven – one shy of the school record - from deep against Buffalo.
Simmons Steps Up
Sophomore F Marquise Simmons – who missed the first nine games of the season with a hand injury – netted a new career-high 18 points on 6-of-12 from the field against La Salle. He notched nine points and tied a career high with nine rebounds in nine first-half minutes to pace the Bonnies to a 10-point lead, 37-27, at the break. Against UMass, he hit for 14 points, including 8-of-8 from the free throw line. He played just three minutes in his debut against Va. Tech, but has been increasingly active on both ends of the floor with more playing time.
Bouncing Back
After starting the season 1-for-11 from beyond the arc, Davenport has lifted his 3FG% to near-record levels. His 37 percent conversion rate from 3-point range would fall just outside the school single-season top 10 list if the season ended today.
Clutch When it Counts
The Bonnies have made five game-winning or game-tying shots on their final possession, including three with fewer than seven seconds remaining in regulation. Andrew Nicholson drained game-winning jump shots in consecutive games against Buffalo (6.8 seconds left) and St. John's (5.2), followed later in the season by Michael Davenport's winning 3-pointer with 1.6 ticks showing against Duquesne. Against Virginia Tech in the Blue Cross Arena, senior G Ogo Adegboye knocked down a triple with 20 seconds left on SBU's final possession, sending the game into overtime. Davenport also converted from beyond the arc with 22 seconds left in the second overtime period against Ohio, sending the game to a third extra frame.
Hitting the Boards
Senior G Ogo Adegboye hauled in a career-high seven rebounds in a dramatic win over then-A-10 leader Duquesne Feb. 5, and upped his best again in his next outing with eight caroms against La Salle. Against Duquesne, the London native grabbed five of his rebounds on the defensive end in the first half, and collected his seventh after a Nicholson rejection at the 10:28 mark of the final stanza.
Turning Things Around
In each year since 2004-05, the Bonnies have lowered their RPI. The 2004-05 season saw SBU finish with a ratings percentage index of 312 among 330 teams, followed by season-ending ratings of 290 and 278 in 2006 and 07, respectively. Under Schmidt, the Bonnies RPI has fallen from 264 in 2008 to 193 and 154 in the last two campaigns.
Run Up the Score
Based on the Bonnies season thus far, a high-scoring affair favors the Brown and White. When scoring 70 or more points, SBU is 9-1. Conversely, the Bonnies are just 7-12 if they score fewer than 70.
Sharing the Sugar
Senior PG Ogo Adegboye - a team captain in his second and final season in the Brown and White - handed out a game-high eight assists in the loss to Dayton Feb. 2. For his career, the London native has 12 games with six or more helpers, including ten this season.
It's Up, and Good!
Nicholson made a career-high 15 field goals in his 35-point outburst at Dayton, arguably one of his best games in a Bona uniform. In the opening 20 minutes, he went 6-of-9 from the floor en route to 15 of the 23 Bona points in the first half. He finished off the second-highest scoring game of his career with a 9-of-14 effort in the second half.
Return to Sender
Against Dayton, Bonnies' junior Andrew Nicholson blocked three shots to move into sole possession of second place on the career rejections list. Nicholson's block at the 6:31 mark of the second period against Ohio made him just the third player in school history to block 150 or more shots in a career. The junior Mississauga native also owns the Bonnies' single-game record (9 vs. Bucknell).
Same Starting Five
Bonaventure is one of three teams nationally to use the same starters in every game: Cleveland State (34 games); Missouri State (33) and St. Bonaventure (30). James Madison (changed after 27 games) and Evansville (21) were previously on the list but have now used different starting lineups.
Oh So Close
When the final margin is five or fewer points, St. Bonaventure is an impressive 7-3, with the only losses coming at Rhode Island, versus Dayton, and against La Salle in 2 OT. When the final margin is just four points bigger (margin between 6-10), the Bonnies are 3-6.
Schmidt & Staff Pass Baron
Jim Baron, the last coach to lead the Bonnies to a postseason tournament (NIT, 2002), posted 48 wins in his first four campaigns. Now in their fourth season on the Bona sidelines, Schmidt and his staff (all of whom eventually worked under Schmidt at Robert Morris) have collected 54…and counting. By number of victories in their first four seasons, here's how it breaks down:
75 Ed Melvin (1948-52)
72 Jim Satalin (1973-77)
67 Jim O'Brien (1982-86)
58 Larry Weise (1961-65)
54 Mark Schmidt (2007-Pres.)
53 Eddie Donovan (1953-57)
48 Jim Baron (1992-96)
Mike Reilly (1928-32)
24 Anthony Solomon (2003-07)
NLI Signees
SBU added a pair of guards in the early signing period. Schenectady native Derrick Millinghaus, who currently attends Queen City Prep in Marshville, N.C., is a 1-2 combo guard with an open-court style. Millinghaus will have four years of eligibility, while fellow signee Eric Mosely will have two years remaining. Mosely currently attends Cincinnati State Technical and Community College and spent his freshman season at Austin Peay in 2008-09.
APR Improvement
Mark Schmidt ranks 13th in the nation in NCAA Academic Progress Rate (APR) improvement, as calculated by Fox Sports. Schmidt is among the top coaches nationally in cumulative improvement of his team APR, a metric used by NCAA officials to track the academic achievement of Division I teams during each academic term. Each student-athlete earns one point for staying in school and one point for being academically eligible. A team's total points are divided by points possible and multiplied by 1,000 to equal the team's APR score.
Out of Our League
St. Bonaventure ended the non-conference season with an 8-5 record that included: a comeback win over Cornell in Ithaca, back-to-back game-winning jumpers from Andrew Nicholson to defeat Buffalo and St. John's, the longest game in school history (4OT) against Ohio, and a near-upset of Virginia Tech (OT).
1,000 for #44
St. Bonaventure's Andrew Nicholson became the 38th player in school history to score 1,000 career points in the loss to Niagara. After missing his first attempt and being held scoreless over the first 11:56, the junior Mississauga native drained a foul-line jumper to move past the barrier in just his 66th game. Nicholson was a shoe size away from recording his 1,000th career point in comeback fashion in his previous outing against St. John's, as his stepback game-winning jumper was originally thought to be a 3-pointer.
And Boom Goes the Dynamite
Ogo Adegboye made seven 3-pointers – one shy of the school record – in a Dec. 4 effort to hold off Buffalo, 76-74. He tied his previous career high 17 points and set personal high-water marks for 3-point makes and attempts in the first half alone in helping SBU to an 11-point lead at the break. Adegboye ended the game with new career-highs of 24 points and 10 assists for his first career double-double. The outburst also raised his season 3FG% at the time from 31.6 to a blistering 46.4.
Franciscan Cup
As schools with shared Franciscan heritage, St. Bonaventure president sister Margaret Carney and Siena president father Kevin Mullen agreed that the schools should play for a traveling trophy when the teams meet on the hardwood. The Bonnies claimed the inaugural Cup with an 82-79 win over the Saints Dec. 28 in the first game of a four-year pairing that will bring the Bonnies to the Times Union Center next season.
House and Home
Redshirt sophomore F/C Jake Houseknecht saw the most action of his career in the 4OT win against Ohio. The Olean native played 36 minutes (previous career high: 11), grabbed nine boards (previous high: 4) and blocked three shots (had 5 total in his career) to give SBU a lift off the bench. After not playing in three previous games earlier in the year, Houseknecht earned more minutes and was the first Bona 'Big' off the bench against the Bobcats.
Deja 'Drew
Nicholson hit game-winning jumpers from nearly the same spot on the floor in the Bonnies' wins against UB and St. John's. The Buffalo game winner came with 6.8 seconds left to lift SBU to a 76-74 win, while the jab-step, stepback shot against the Red Storm gave a 67-66 edge with 5.2 left.
Gotta Have the Free Ones
The Bonnies sank a season-high 31 free throws in the 3OT win over Charlotte, including 9 of 10 in the third and final overtime period.
Helping Hand
Senior G Ogo Adegboye dished out seven assists and had only three turnovers as the primary ball handler in 45 minutes against Charlotte. It marked the fifth time this season the London native has recorded an A:TO ratio of 2:1 or better.
Seeing Double-Double
The Ohio game marked the fourth time this season that two players have recorded a double-double in the same contest (Cornell, Cleveland State, Niagara). In a counterintuitive twist, the Bonnies are 2-2 in those games. When just one player accomplishes the feat (both Ark.-Little Rock games, Binghamton, Buffalo, St. John's, VT, Rhode Island), the team is 6-5.
Double Down
RS-Junior Da'Quan Cook – who wore #21 last season – posted his second double-double of the year against Niagara. Cook hauled in 10 boards and scored 11 points in that game after a 21-point, 13-rebound effort helped the Bonnies cruise past Binghamton Nov. 21. So far this season, the Bonnies have 20 double doubles from four different players: Nicholson (11), Conger (4), Cook (2), Davenport (2) and Adegboye (1). Earlier this season, Nicholson's streak of five straight double doubles tied for the second-longest in the country.
Streak Ends at 20
Junior Andrew Nicholson had scored in double figures in 20 straight contests – the most by an A-10 player - dating back to Feb. 27, 2010 against Rhode Island, but against the Rams this season, Nicholson finished with just nine points. Over that 20-game span, which included seven double-doubles, Nicholson averaged 20.7 points and 7.3 caroms per game.
Shouldering the Load
Michael Davenport, who finished with game and career-highs of 28 points and 12 rebounds against Rhode Island, outscored and outshot the rest of his teammates in that 56-55 loss. While Davenport was 12-of-19 (2-5 3FG) from the field, the rest of the lineup was 7-for-31 (1-9 3FG) for 27 points. The Cincinnati native also had runs of nine and seven consecutive points in the first half, and made all but three of the Bonnies' 10 first-half FGs.
Going the Distance
St. Bonaventure played the longest game in its 91-year history Dec. 18 versus Ohio, as the Bonnies and Bearcats went to four overtimes (a full 1.5 games). The Bonnies had four players log more than 53 minutes (Adegboye, Conger, Davenport, Nicholson) and redshirt F/C Jake Houseknecht booked 36 minutes for a new career-high. Nicholson played the full 60 minutes – the second game in a row he was not subbed for – and Adegboye (59 mins) played all but one. Five days later, the Bonnies took Virginia Tech to a single OT period.
Wright Way for the Rookie
St. Bonaventure's Matthew Wright and Duquesne's T.J. McConnell were honored as Co-Rookies of the Week for the week ending Jan. 24. Wright upped his career-high scoring total in back-to-back games, pouring in 10 and 18 against Xavier and George Washington, respectively. The freshman guard shot 75.0 percent (9-of-12) on the week, including 71.4 percent (5-of-7) from 3-point land. Wright is the first freshman to claim the weekly honor since Andrew Nicholson did it six times in his freshman year.
Wet Your Whistle
Foul trouble has limited Andrew Nicholson's play in several games. Against Arkansas-Little Rock, the junior was whistled for three fouls in the first 8:55 of the game and finished with 11 points – his lowest output of the season at that point – in just 20 minutes of action. Nicholson had been forced to sit in three straight (22 mins vs. URI, 23 vs. Xavier, 19 vs. GW). His streak of 20 games with 10+ points came to an end against Rhode Island (nine points, season low) and he was called for his fifth foul with the Bonnies mounting a comeback at the 7:08 mark against Xavier (XU went on a game-clinching 11-4 run over the next four minutes).
Keep it Under 50
When the Bonnies defeated GW, 62-49, it marked the first time SBU held an A-10 opponent under 50 points in a win on the road since a 46-44 decision at Fordham Feb. 21, 1998. The Bonnies hadn't kept a league opponent under 50 points overall since Jan. 29, 2000 - an 84-44 drubbing of URI in the Reilly Center.
Mr. Consistency
A rising sophomore who showed flashes of talent last season, Conger has been one of the more consistent performers this season, recording at least eight points and three boards in 17 straight games from Nov. 19 at Cornell - where he notched his first career double-double (22 pts, 14 reb) - to Jan. 26 versus Massachusetts.
Bonnies Honor Stith
In memory of Tom Stith '61, the first All-American in St. Bonaventure basketball history, the Bonnies wore commemorative "TS #42" patches on their jerseys during the Fordham and Dayton games. Stith, a New York City native, died in June 2010 at a hospice near his home in Farmingville, N.Y. after a battle with cancer. He was 71.
And-1 (More)
The Bonnies have actually played the equivalent of 1.5 extra games this season when accounting for TEN overtime periods. SBU has played OT-2OT-3OT and 4OT this year (2-2).
'Meech' less
Wednesday night's win over Saint Louis marked the first time that sophomore Demitrius Conger has been held scoreless in 25 games as a starter. Conger has 24 starts this year at the forward position, and earned a spot in the lead cast for the Bonnies in the opening round of the A-10 Championship against Duquesne last season.
Matty Ice
Fan-favorite and freshman Matthew Wright continues to provide a spark in his first season. Wright – who was 1-for-21 from 3-point range in the non-conference season – has also shown a flair for timely baskets, including a triple with 1:21 left to highlight a 7-0 surge that gave SBU a three-point lead against Duquesne in the RC.
They Did What?!
The wins over Cornell and Binghamton were highlighted by two noteworthy stats. Against the Big Red, the Bonnies managed a 56-54 win despite the combined 1-for-23 shooting performance outside of leading scorers Conger (8-of-11) and Nicholson (8-of-15). Two days later against Binghamton, SBU used a 20-0 run in which the Bearcats were 0-for-9 from the field to pull away.
Ogo in the Olympics?
Senior G Ogo Adegboye spent his summer playing for Great Britain in the Eurobasket qualifying tournament. In contrast with other sports which receive an automatic Olympics berth as host nation, GB basketball must qualify for the London 2012 games and took a big step toward that goal by advancing to its fourth-straight Eurobasket championship that will take place in Lithuania in 2011. Adegboye was playing on the U23 team but received a call-up to the senior men's team after injuries to several players, including Chicago Bulls' star Luol Deng, short changed GB head coach Chris Finch's options. Adegboye earned the starting point guard spot in all eight games and averaged 4.8 points and 21.1 minutes per contest with a 1.3 assist/turnover ratio.
International Men of Mystery
Four players on the 2010-11 roster hail from outside of the United States. Andrew Nicholson (Mississauga) and freshman Matt Wright (Toronto) both came to St. Bonaventure from Ontario, Canada, while Ogo Adegboye (London, England) and Sam de Haas (Den Bosch, Netherlands) have European roots.
Stealing Minutes
In the win over St. John's, Schmidt effectively deployed just two bench players to keep his lead cast in the game. In a combined 13 minutes, the bench was 0-2 from the floor with two rebounds, three fouls and one turnover.
#100 for Schmidt
In his fourth season at St. Bonaventure, head coach Mark Schmidt coached his 100th game at SBU against Ohio Dec. 18, 2010. Schmidt's .430 (43-56) win percentage entering the game was the highest by a Bonnies' mentor since Jim Baron's .502 (132-131) mark compiled from 1992-01. Schmidt and Baron are the only two coaches to post a win-loss percentage over .400 since the start of the 1987 season.
Nicholson's Streak Snapped
With 21 points and eight rebounds, Nicholson had his nation-leading streak of five consecutive double-doubles snapped against Virginia Tech.
Stat Stuffer
Sophomore Brooklyn native Demitrius Conger finished with nine points, eight boards and six assists to go with a block and a steal on 3-of-4 from beyond the arc in 38 minutes of work against Buffalo. He had already posted the first two double-doubles of his career and was riding a three-game double-digit scoring streak prior to the UB game before adding his third in the 4OT win against Ohio (22P, 12R).
Against Ranked Teams
The potential meeting between St. Bonaventure and Temple would be the second time this season that the Bonnies have faced a ranked opponent. SBU is 9-49 against ranked teams and has not beaten a top-25 foe since a 57-56 defeat of No. 20 Temple at the Reilly Center Jan. 15, 2000 (0-18 since).
Gotta Have the Free Ones
The Bonnies sank a season-high 31 free throws in the 3OT win over Charlotte, including 9 of 10 in the third and final overtime period.
Streak Ended at 20
Junior Andrew Nicholson had scored in double figures in 20 straight contests – the most by an A-10 player at the time - dating back to Feb. 27, 2010 against Rhode Island. But against the Rams on the road this season, Nicholson finished with just nine points. Over that 20-game span, which included seven double-doubles, Nicholson averaged 20.7 points and 7.3 caroms per game.
He Did it Again
Andrew Nicholson notched his eighth double-double of the season with 25 points and 11 rebounds as the Bonnies held on to defeat Fordham, 69-60, at Rose Hill. It marked his first double-double in 10 games after accomplishing the feat in seven of the first nine games to start the year.
Sharing the Sugar
Ogo Adegboye - a team captain in his second and final season in the Brown and White - handed out a game-high eight assists in the loss to Dayton.
So Long, Streak
The Bonnies handed Duquesne a 64-62 loss Feb. 5 to halt the Dukes' 11-game win streak, which ranked as the fourth-longest in the nation. DU also brought an 8-0 conference record into that contest.
Tech.
SATURDAY Funday?
The Bonnies have played 11 Saturday games this season, the most of any day of the week. In those games, SBU is 8-3 – its best record by day.
Not So Brotherly Love
Philadelphia hasn't lived up to its nickname as the city of "Brotherly Love" in the case of St. Bonaventure. The Bonnies snapped an 18-game losing streak with an 68-62 win at La Salle last season, but are just 6-57 all-time in Philly overall during the regular season against their trio of Atlantic 10 foes (Temple, La Salle, Saint Joe's).
Aren't You Guys Tired?
Ogo Adegboye ranks second the nation in minutes per game (38.6) and has played at least 36 minutes in all but three contests, including complete-game efforts against Buffalo, St. John's, Niagara, Ark.-Little Rock, Charlotte (3OT) and Dayton. Demitrius Conger has played nearly 90 percent of possible minutes and is among the national minutes leaders (36.7/gm). Andrew Nicholson was in for the duration against Ohio (60 min, 4OT) and Charlotte (55 min, 3OT).
