Bonnies Open Atlantic 10 Play With A Trip To Philly

ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. –The St. Bonaventure men's soccer team (2-8) begins Atlantic 10 Conference play with a trip to Philadelphia to take on the Temple Owls (4-4-1) Friday at 2:30 p.m. at Ambler Sports Complex and the Saint Joseph's Hawks (6-5) Sunday at 1 p.m. at Finnesey Field.

The Bonnies enter their conference schedule following a 1-0 home victory over Siena on Sunday.  Junior midfielder Brad Vanino scored the game's only goal in the 78th minute, giving the Bonnies their second victory at McGraw-Jennings Field. Through 10 games, Vanino leads the team with two goals, two assists and six points.

The Owls begin A-10 play after a 2-0 road victory over Rider. Through nine games, freshman midfielder Jared Martinelli, two-time winner of the A-10 and Philadelphia Soccer Six Rookie of the Week, leads the team in scoring with five goals, five assists and 15 points. Junior goalkeeper Bobby Rosato has started six games and holds a 3-3 record with a 1.46 goals against avg. and a .757 save percentage. Sophomore Dan Scheck from Sayville, N.Y. has started three games and has a 1-1-1 record with a 0.71 goals against avg. and a .778 save percentage.

Coach David MacWilliams, in his 13th season, has taken the Owls to the Atlantic 10 tournament the past two seasons and three out of the last four seasons. Last season Temple beat St. Bonaventure 2-1. The Bonnies are 1-3 against Temple since 2006. Winners of three of their last four games, the Owls hope to build on their 3-0 record at home.

The Hawks look to extend their winning streak to three games after road wins against Bucknell and Loyola (Md.) 1-0 and 2-1 respectively. Before facing the Bonnies, St. Joseph's will host Duquesne at 7 p.m. on Friday

Four players lead the Hawks with two goals. Sophomore midfielder Jake Nelson leads the team with seven points. Against Loyola he netted a penalty shot with nine seconds left in overtime for a 2-1 victory.

Senior goalkeeper Andrew D'Ottavi, starter for all nine games, has posted a 1.74 goals against avg. with a save percent of .709. Last season, he posted two shutouts with one coming against St. Bonaventure.

Coach Don D'Ambra enters his third season. In his first as two seasons, the Hawks finished 2-15 and 1-8 in conference play. A decorated player at St. Joes from 1990-94, D'Ambra was a Regional All-America First Team selection and scored the most goals (41) and points (102) in school history. He set the single season records for goals (15) and points (38) and is the only player in school history to win Atlantic 10 Player of the Year.

Since 2004, St. Bonaventure is 4-1-1 against SJU. In their last meeting, the Bonnies lost 1-0 in overtime.

Following this weekend's Philadelphia contests, St. Bonaventure will host Duquesne at McGraw Jennings-Field at 1 p.m. on Oct. 14.
