Hartwick Nets Five, Bonnies Still Winless

Box Score

ONEONTA, N.Y. – The St. Bonaventure men's soccer team (0-5) is still in search of its first win tonight after giving up five second half goals to Hartwick (1-1-2) in the opening match of the Mayor's Cup Invitational at Hartwick University.

The first half of this one was relatively un-eventful. The teams combined for just eight shots and the goalies combined for three saves. The Bonnies managed three corner kicks while not allowing Hartwick any. SBU mid-fielders Brad Vanino and Adam Scott would each receive a yellow card in the first half as well.

In the second half the Bonnies would get the scoring started and take their first lead of the season when sophomore defender Garrett Pasono headed home the first goal of his career on a corner kick off the foot of Brad Vanino in the 48th minute. However the Bonnies would give it right back just three minutes later when Garrett Pasono would foul a Hartwick player in the box, receive a yellow card and grant the Hawks a penalty kick. David Styles capitalized for his first goal of the season, striking a low ball past a diving Ben Cowman, tying the score 1-1.

Hartwick's second goal came when a corner kick was bounced around in the box. Ross Mackinnon ended up getting a clean look and finished giving the Hawks their first lead, 2-1, in the 78th minute. Just over two minutes later, Pasono picked up his second yellow card resulting in a red card and an ejection from the game, forcing the Bonnies to play a man down the rest of the way. Hartwick promptly picked up their third goal of the night just 12 seconds later when Jack Miller scored on a rebound from a David Styles cross.

Only 59 seconds would pass before Cleyon Brown got free, beat his defender and finished the Nathaniel Horton through ball, pushing the score to 4-1. Emmett O'Connor would pick up the fifth yellow card for SBU in this one in the 82nd minute.

In the 88th minute Nathaniel Horton scored a goal of his own to complete the scoring. Horton took a David Styles pass, cut inside his defender and blasted home the score to the far post from 12 yards out.

The Bonnies will be back in action on Sunday (Sept. 9) when they take on Big East foe Syracuse at noon. SBU will be in search of their first win this season. Free Live Video will be available once again.

GAME NOTES: Hartwick outshot the Bonnies 19-9 in this one and managed three more shots on goal. SBU took more corners (7-3).  SBU committed 13 fouls while Hartwick committed 11. At 0-5 the Bonnies continue their worst start since 2006 when they started 0-9-2. The Bonnies have allowed 20 goals so far this season which marks the most they've allowed through five games since 1994 when SBU gave up 25 goals through its first five.
