ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – The St. Bonaventure men's tennis team returns to the court for a weekend doubleheader and its first Atlantic 10 matchup of the year.
The Bonnies host conference rival Duquesne at 3 p.m. Friday at the SBU Fitness Center before traveling to meet Cleveland State at 7 p.m. Saturday in a non-conference dual to close the weekend.
St. Bonaventure (2-3) is looking to get back on track after suffering losses at Virginia Tech and home to Bucknell last weekend.
Duquesne, 6-2 on the season, presents the Bonnies a tough challenge. Six of seven Dukes players boast winning records in singles play, led by Alex Aleman (8-3) and Rich Robbie (7-3). In doubles competition, Aleman and Pete Carpenter have paired for a 7-2 mark, while Robbie and Ben Klaas have forged a 6-1 record for Duquesne.
The Dukes, who opened their A-10 schedule with a 7-0 loss to Xavier, have dominated SBU over the last three years – with a pair of 6-1 victories and another by 7-0. In last year's 6-1 loss, Bona's top doubles team of Oscar Yanez and Luis Guevara scored the team's lone win.
The Bonnies have also struggled against Cleveland State (2-6) of late, having lost five consecutive matches to the Vikings heading into Saturday's competition. CSU blanked Bona 7-0 last year.
Matt Ford and Matt Kuelker lead the Vikings' single players with nine wins each. In doubles play for CSU, the duo of Niklas Jonsson and Ali Shabib possess a team-best 15-4 record.
The Vikings are coming off a 4-3 loss to Buffalo.
Guevara and junior Javier Ortiz (pictured) lead the Bonnies with seven singles victories apiece. Ortiz improved to 4-1 in the spring season with his victory against Bucknell. The senior doubles tandem of Guevara and Yanez also produced a win against the Bison, moving its record to a team-best 9-5.
After this weekend, St. Bonaventure returns home for matchups against New Jersey Tech at 3 p.m. Saturday, March 2 and IPFW at 11 a.m. Sunday, March 3.
