MASON, Ohio – The St. Bonaventure men's tennis season ended on Thursday morning with the team's 4-0 loss to Duquesne in the first round of the Atlantic 10 Championship at Lidner Family Tennis Center.
The Bonnies, seeded 12th in the 14-team tournament, finish up the year with a 5-14 record, while the fifth-seeded Dukes improved to 12-6 and move onto a quarterfinal match against No. 4 Xavier on Friday.
Three SBU players suffered straight set losses as junior Elliot Fanshel fell 6-4, 6-3 to Rich Robbie at first singles, senior Luis Guevara was bested 6-1, 6-1 by Alex Aleman at third singles, and freshman Celso de Vera Rehberger was defeated 6-1, 6-3 by Harry Walshe in the sixth singles match.
The Bonnies fared no better in doubles play as the team's top tandem of Guevara and classmate Oscar Yanez suffered an 8-3 loss to Aleman and Pete Carpenter. SBU's third pair of freshman Gabriel Cardenas and Trevor Haskell also fell 8-3 to Robbie and Ben Klaas.
Yanez and Haskell lost the first sets of their singles matches that were not finished, while junior Javier Ortiz trailed 4-1 in a first-set tiebreaker when his fourth singles match against Corey Robinson was called. Fanshel and Ortiz trailed 6-4 in the second doubles match that did not finish.
The Bonnies failed to win a first round Atlantic 10 Championship match for the third straight year. Duquesne which downed St. Bonaventure, 5-2, in late February, defeated the Bonnies for the sixth straight time dating back to the start of the 2009-10 season.
