Newark, N.J. – The St. Bonaventure Men's soccer team (4-2) created multiple chances for the offense but fail to capitalize as they fall to the NJIT Highlanders (2-3-1) by a score of 3-0.Â
The Bonnies would be able to control the tempo for most of the first half, out shooting the highlanders 10-2. They also tallied five corner kicks. \
In the second half the game turned away from being a one sided affair for SBU and turn into one for the Highlanders after NJIT would record 12 shots compared to only having two in the previous half.Â
The first goal was put on the board after Tommy Osipitan would put a strong move on the ball and shoot from 12 yards out and tuck it into the right corner. Osipitan wasn't done just yet, seven minutes later he found the back of the net again after receiving the pass from Marko Drljic from 30 yards out and blast the ball over Jeremy Figler to have NJIT go up 2-0. The final goal would come in the final moments of the game when SBU was pushing men forward to get a goal and the Highlanders went on the counter-attack and sealed their 3-0 victory.Â
The Brown and White had nine different players record at least one shot of their 18 shots on the day. Brad Beaumont would lead the squad with five shots taken. Emmett O'Connor followed up right behind him with four shots.Â
"A tough weekend for us. Thought we could bounce back from Friday's defeat and we created more than enough scoring chances to win the match but we could find the back of the net. Give credit to NJIT. They defended well and with great determination and made the best of our defensive lapses to get three goals. We'll use the week to get healthy and prepare for our home matches next weekend," said Coach Mel Mahler after the defeat.Â
The Bonnies are back in action on Friday, Sept. 20 when they take on the Riverhawks of UMass-Lowell at McGraw-Jennings field. Kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m.
