@BonniesMSoccer Falls to Canisius in Overtime, 2-1

Box Score

St. Bonaventure, N.Y. – The St. Bonaventure men's soccer team (6-4-0) fell in dramatic fashion on Sunday afternoon to the Canisius College Golden Griffins (4-3-1) in overtime by the score of 2-1. The deciding goal came in the 96th minute from a penalty kick off the foot of Canisius' Will Hudson for his second tally of the game.

Sunday's affair between the two rivals featured a fairly mellow first half with very limited scoring chances from both sides.  It wasn't until the second half where things quickly intensified following the halftime break and both teams took the field with a real sense of urgency.  The pace wasn't the only thing that intensified, as the emotions on the field did as well. In total, the teams racked up 13 fouls and a pair of yellow cards.

The Bonnies opened up the scoring in the second half when junior Garrett Pasono put one in past goalkeeper Ryan Arvin of the Golden Griffins.  Canisius would quickly answer back in the 53rd minute as Will Hudson would net his first of two goals on the day. Both sides continued to exchange scoring opportunities as the end of second half neared, however, 90 minutes was not enough time to decide this one as the game would head to overtime.

With just a few minutes remaining in the 10 minute overtime session, the Brown and White got called for a foul in their own box, resulting in a penalty kick for the Golden Griffins. Will Hudson capitalized on his opportunity at the direct free kick, thus, defeating SBU in the extra period.

Frustration was evident for much of the afternoon for the Bonnies, and disappointment would be the end result. "It's disappointing to not come away from the weekend with two wins, especially after playing as well as we did Friday night against Binghamton. Today we witnessed a similar match and result from a week ago Sunday. Credit goes to Canisius, they were more successful at winning the direct balls and pressuring us to make mistakes. It was not a pretty match to watch and their disruptive style of play was something we didn't have an answer for. We need to get better at finding ways to win these types of matches. Looking back on our four loses, three were to similar type teams and I'm certain we'll face more teams with this style. While we have work to do to sort out these issues, I'm confident we'll be a better team when conference play starts in two weeks", stated head coach Mel Mahler after the game.

The Brown and White will look to bounce back on Sunday, Oct. 6 when they travel to St. Francis (Pa.) in what is the Bonnies final non-conference game of the season.
