The Short Story: Playing on the home floor of the A-10's best defensive team, St. Bonaventure battled but came up just short, falling 53-48 to Rhode Island on Sunday afternoon.

The game was tied at 47-47 after two free throws by Youssou Ndoye with 2:32 left. The Rams benefitted from consecutive fouls called against Dion Wright and Marcus Posley, as T.J. Buchanan made four free throws, the last which gave Rhode Island a 51-47 lead with 1:37 remaining. Hassan Martin then blocked shots by Posley and Jaylen Adams and the Bonnies were forced to foul with 21 seconds left. The Rams sealed their win with two more free throws.

St. Bonaventure saw its three-game winning streak snapped and fell to 11-7 overall and 4-3 in the Atlantic 10 Conference.

Dion Wright tied his career high with 22 points and also added 10 rebounds. Posley, the leading scorer in the A-10, was held to six points on 3-12 shooting. The Bonnies, who trailed 24-20 at halftime, made 35 percent of their shots for the day.

How It Happened:

  • The first half set the tone for a tight, defensive struggle as neither team could find many easy shots. The Bonnies did start well, taking a 10-7 lead on a layup by Posley.
  • St. Bonaventure struggled with the Rams' pressure in the first half, committing 10 turnovers prior to halftime.
  • Jay Adams made a free throw to give the Bonnies a 20-19 lead, but Rhode Island scored the last five points of the half, including a high-arching three pointer by Jared Terrell, to take a 24-20 lead into the break.
  • Posley and Adams both scored six points in the first, while Youssou Ndoye went scoreless.
  • The Rams opened a 31-22 lead early in the second half. It was a 35-27 game when Dion Wright and Adams fueled an 8-0 run that tied the score at 35 at the 12:36 mark.
  • Wright scored 12 of St. Bonaventure's first 18 points of the second half, mainly inside as the Bonnies spaced the floor and got Wright one-on-one matchups.
  • From the that point mark to there was just 1:37 left, neither team led by more than three points. There were two ties and seven lead changes over that span.
  • St. Bonaventure's last field goal was a layup by Wright with 5:49 left. The Bonnies missed their last seven field goal attempts of the game.
  • Blanketed by multiple Ram defenders, Posley went scoreless in the second half.
  • Adams was the only Bona player beside Wright to reach double figures; he finished with 10 points.

Beyond The Boxscore:

  • Rhode Island played its first game without leading scorer E.C. Matthews, who has a foot injury. Matthews averages 17 points per game.
  • Wright's double-double was his fourth of the season.
  • Wright's 22 points tied his career high set in a win at Iona last season.
  • St. Bonaventure connected on just one (of six) three-point field goal attempts, by Adams in the first half. It was not the fewest three-pointers made by Bona in a game this year (none at Richmond) but it came after a 12-23 shooting game in Thursday's OT win at Duquesne.
  • The Bonnies' 47 points were their second-lowest scoring game of the season (41 at Richmond) and only the fourth time this season they have been held below 60.
  • Youssou Ndoye's 11 rebounds marked his 13th game of the season with double-figure rebounds. He also finished at his season average with three blocked shots.
  • Sunday was just the third time that Posley has been held under 10 points. His six points tied his season low.

Up Next: The Bonnies are idle until next Saturday, Jan. 31, when they will host LaSalle at the Reilly Center. Tipoff will be at 7 p.m.
