STORYLINE
The St. Bonaventure University men's soccer team concludes its regular season schedule in a crucial Atlantic 10 Conference game at home against VCU. The Bonnies are coming off a 2-1 double overtime victory against La Salle and a win this Wednesday would lead to an A-10 Tournament berth.
FINISHING STRONG
After starting 0-4 in conference play, the Bonnies have stormed back to win their last three conference games. They currently are tied for the eighth and final playoff spot with Saint Louis, with an Atlantic 10 record of 3-4. The Bonnies have defeated Duquesne 1-0, George Mason 1-0 and La Salle 2-1 in their previous three contests.
PLAYOFF SCENARIOS
The Bonnies must win or tie to have an opportunity to extend their season. SBU controls its own destiny as it would hold a tiebreaker with Saint Louis with a victory on Wednesday. St. Bonaventure earns an A-10 Tournament berth with:
- A Bonnies win
- If SBU and Saint Louis win, Bonnies advance due to conference record vs. highest common opponent.
- A Bonnies tie and Saint Louis loss.
- With a Bonnies and Saint Louis loss, Saint Louis advances due to conference record vs. common opponents.
- If Bonnies and Saint Louis both tie, Saint Louis advances due to conference record vs. common opponents.
- The possibility also exists for a three or four-way tie should Davidson lose to La Salle and Rhode Island lose to Saint Joseph's.
LAST MEETING
The last game played between VCU and St. Bonaventure was at the Marra Athletics Complex on Wednesday, Oct. 7, 2015. The Brown and White fell to VCU by a score of 2-0. The Rams were held scoreless until the 42nd minute, when Lyndsey Moreland scored his first goal of the year. Despite several scoring opportunities for the Bonnies, VCU capitalized yet again with a late goal from Cody Sweatte to secure the win.
ABOUT VCU
The Rams (10-4, 6-1) have had a great season so far and are riding a four game win streak. Their success has been a factor mostly on the road, with an away record of 6-1. The Rams are led by seniors Rafael Santos and Fran Amorosino, who have both notched eight goals through 14 games played.
MOVING IN RIGHT DIRECTION
- For the second straight season A-10 Tournament implications for the Bonnies come down to the final game.
