The Starting Five Notes
1. Wednesday evening in Philadelphia, the Bonnies and Hawks complete their season series. The first meeting was a 67-63 decision for St. Bonaventure on Jan. 24 at the Reilly Center, a game in which the Bonnies overcame an 18-point second half deficit to win.
2. St. Bonaventure hopes to continue its push toward another strong Atlantic 10 finish, entering the week in a three-way tie for fifth place with George Mason and La Salle. The Bonnies, who have two road games and two home games remaining, have won 22 of their last 32 conference games and are 32-18 in A-10 games since the start of the 2014-15 season.
3. Jaylen Adams and Matt Mobley are the fourth-highest scoring teammate tandem in the country, averaging 40.6 points per game. They each have 14 games of 20 points or more. Adams leads the Atlantic 10 and ranks 11th nationally in scoring (21.6). Mobley ranks fifth in the A-10 at 19.0 points per game and leads the conference in three-pointers.
4. Adams does much more than just score from his point guard position. He leads the A-10 and ranks ninth in the country in assists (6.6 per game). Adams totaled 29 assists over the past three games. He also ranks second in the A-10 in steals (2.1).
5. In his first year as a starter, senior Denzel Gregg is playing better than any point in his career, including last season when he was co-Sixth Man of the Year in the Atlantic 10. He is among the A-10 leaders in rebounding, blocks and field goal percentage and has become a reliable scorer with 17 games in double figures. Gregg scored a career-best 28 points in the Feb. 15 win over La Salle, and he has seven double-doubles this season.
Series Notes:
This will be the 72nd meeting all-time between these long time Atlantic 10 rivals. The Hawks hold a 43-28 lead in the series, but the Bonnies have won the last six meetings. The first-ever meeting between the schools was in 1958.
St. Bonaventure vs. Saint Joseph's: The Last Meeting
Jan. 24, 2017 at Reilly Center: Bonnies 67, Hawks 63
Virtually nothing went right for St. Bonaventure for the first three-quarters of the game. But the last six minutes, everything the home team needed to happen did, and the Bonnies came back to top the Hawks. St. Bonaventure trailed by as many as 18 points in the second half, the last time with 14:07 left. Midway through the half, the Bonnies trimmed their deficit to nine, only to see Saint Joseph's regain control and lead 59-46 with 6:33 remaining. But the Hawks went cold and the Bonnies seized the opportunity. Freshman Josh Ayeni's jumper with 1:31 left capped a 17-3 run and gave St. Bonaventure its first lead of the night at 63-62. Saint Joseph's Charlie Brown missed two three-pointers and Jaylen Adams closed out the win with four free throws. Adams led the Bonnies with 19 points and five assists. Matt Mobley added 13 points – all coming over the final nine minutes. Ayeni and Denzel Gregg both scored 12, and Gregg grabbed 12 rebounds.
Saint Joseph's Notes:
• The Hawks have lost six games in a row and stand 3-11 in the Atlantic 10, tied for last place. Feb. 11 against UMass, starting point guard and second-leading scorer Lamarr Kimble (15.5 ppg) suffered a broken foot which will sideline him for the rest of the season. Saint Joseph's was already without guard Shavar Newkirk (20.3 ppg) who was injured 12 games into the season and will not return. Despite the injuries, Saint Joseph's has remained competitive, only falling at VCU by 10 points last week.
• Senior forward James Demery (13.7) and freshman swingman Charlie Brown (12.7) are now the Hawks' leading scorers. Chris Clover (6.8) and Nick Robinson (4.7) are playing more at the guard spots. Brown is the Hawks' best three-point shooter at 39 percent on the season.
Defense Improves In A-10 Play
St. Bonaventure's defense has improved in the A-10 season, particularly over the past 10 games when the Bonnies allowed an average of 65.8 points per game. Four times, St. Bonaventure held opponents to halves of 23 points or less, including a 15-point first half by SLU. In their 14 A-10 games, the Bonnies have allowed 69.6 points per game compared to 77 points per game over their 12 non-conference games.
Offense Leads A-10
As you would expect in the A-10 season, defenses tighten and scoring becomes tougher. While the Bonnies have not maintained their scoring pace of the non-conference (84.8), they are still averaging 78.3 points per game, which leads the A-10. The Bonnies have reached the 90-point mark five times including two 100-point games. Only five times have they not reached 70 points. In A-10 games, St. Bonaventure is at 72.8 points per game.
Top 15 In Nation In Free Throw Pct.
Last season, St. Bonaventure set a school record with a .773 free throw percentage. That good shooting at the line has carried over into this season. The Bonnies are at .770 at the charity stripe, which is 15th best in the country and second in the Atlantic 10. Jaylen Adams and Matt Mobley both rank in the top 10 in the conference in free throw percentage. The Bonnies have made 60 more free throws than their opponents.
Mobley Sets Three-Point Pace
Matt Mobley's 77 three-pointers so far this year rank eighth-best in a single season in program history. The record is 101 by Chris Matthews in 2009-10. Feb. 4 against VCU, Mobley broke the school record for three-pointers in a game with nine.
500 Points Plateau
With his 35 points at Dayton, Jaylen Adams topped the 500 point mark for the second year in a row. Matt Mobley needs only six more points to reach 500. All-time, St. Bonaventure has now had 37 players top the 500-point plateau. Three of those were last year, when Adams (537), Marcus Posley (609) and Dion Wright (519) all did it.
Adams Top 15 In Scoring & Assists
Even while earning the full attention of every opposing defense, Jaylen Adams continues to play at an All-Conference level. Adams is 11th in the nation in scoring (21.6 ppg) and ninth nationally in assists (6.6 apg). He leads the A-10 in assists and is tied with Davidson's Jack Gibbs for the A-10 scoring lead. Adams is also is third in the Atlantic 10 in three-pointers (2.8/game) and second in steals (2.1). Adams has 14 games of 20 points or more on the year, including three 30-point performances, most recently a career high 35 at Dayton. He also has four points/assists double-doubles. In the Bonnies' win at Saint Louis, Adams tied the school record with 14 assists, the second time in his career he did that.
Adams Reaches 400 Career Assists
In the Feb. 15 win over La Salle, Jaylen Adams passed the 400 assist mark for his career. He now has 408 for his career. He is only the eighth player in St. Bonaventure history to reach that plateau.
Gregg Provides Senior Leadership
Like many St. Bonaventure players before, Denzel Gregg's career has been marked by improvement, a testament to the program's player development. A fan favorite for his highlight-reel plays, the A-10's coaches named him the co-Sixth Man of the Year in 2015-16. The team's only four-year senior, the 6-7 forward has scored in double figures 17 times, most recently a career high 28 in the win over La Salle Feb. 15. His 12.5 average for the year is three points a game better than last year. At the same time, Gregg continues to be a factor on both ends of the floor. He is fifth in the A-10 in rebounding (7.7) and third in blocked shots. Gregg leads all A-10 players in offensive rebounds (3.0/game). Seven of his eight career double-doubles have been this season. Gregg stands fifth all-time at Bona's in blocked shots with 130.
