Flyers Halt Bonnies Win Streak, 3-1

ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – The St. Bonaventure University women's soccer team fell to Dayton, 3-1, after a hard-fought comeback attempt late in the second half Sunday afternoon at the Marra Athletics Complex.

Graduate forward Cristina Torres netted her Atlantic 10-leading 11th goal of the season to give the Bonnies their lone score of the game.

In the 73rd minute, Torres received a pass from senior forward Ryan Kunkle, made a nice move to beat one defender and then split two more defenders before firing a shot into the back of the net. That made it a 2-1 score after a pair of second half goals from the Flyers broke what was a scoreless tie at intermission.

The Puerto Rico native's impressive score ties her with Patty Boyle (1990) and Heather MacDougall (2005) for eighth all-time in goals in St. Bonaventure single-season history. Also, her 11 goals are the most goals by any Bona's player since MacDougall 16 years ago.

In St. Bonaventure women's soccer history only two players (Trish Quinn with 17 in 1990 and Danielle Tanzi with 17 in 1993) have had more goals in their first season with the program than Torres so far this fall.

The Flyers (9-5-2, 6-2-0 A-10) were able to tally three goals in the second half to secure the victory. The scoring was kicked off by sophomore forward Itala Gemelli in the 49th minute with an assist from sophomore midfielder Diana Benigno. Benigno would score the second goal of the game for Dayton in the 56th minute.

To cap off the afternoon Gemelli would score her second goal of the game in the 86th minute to put the game out of reach.

The Bonnies (6-7-3, 4-4-0) were outshot by the Flyers, 13-5. Torres led the Bonnies in the game with two shots, while Benigno and forward Alica Donley led the Flyers with three shots each.

Bona's freshman goalkeeper Chiara Gottinger recorded four saves in the game, bringing her total to 103 saves on the season to lead the A-10.

The Bonnies go back on the road on Thursday, Oct. 21 to take on UMass. The game is slated to begin at 3:00 p.m.
