AMHERST, Mass. – The St. Bonaventure University women's soccer team was able to come away with a crucial point in the Atlantic 10 standings after finishing with a 0-0 double overtime draw at UMass Thursday evening.
The Bonnies (6-7-4, 4-4-1 A-10) produced their lone scoring opportunity of the first half in the 16th minute. Sophomore forward
McKenna Robinson crossed the ball into the box where graduate forward
Cristina Torres, the league's leading scorer, was able to get her head on the ball and put it in the back of the net. Unfortunately for the visitors, however, the tally was flagged for offsides, wiping out the scoring play.
In the second half, Bona's freshman goalkeeper
Chiara Gottinger made some great plays in net to keep the game tied. The first play came in the 72nd minute when she fought for the ball and won it away from a UMass player off of a corner kick. In the 76th minute, Gottinger made a kick save with her right foot off of a shot in the box from freshman forward Chandler Pedolzky.
SBU senior midfielder
Kacie Filian had two chances for the Bonnies in the second half.
Her first chance came off of a free kick in the 86th minute when she was able to head the ball into a goal, but was called for offsides. The next chance came in the 96th minute off of another header from Filian that sailed wide right of the goal.
The Minutewomen (9-4-4, 5-2-2 A-10) had their best scoring chance come in the first overtime off of a shot from freshman midfielder Bella Recinos. In the 97th minute, Recinos' shot went off the fingertips of a diving Gottinger, and would end up hitting the left post to stay out of the back of the net.
UMass, which entered the day fourth in the A-10 standings, tallied 18 shots in the game and were led by Pedolzky, who finished the game with five shots and two of those shots were on goal.
St. Bonaventure finished the game with seven shots. Senior midfielder
Tsianna Barnwell tallied two shots with one of them being on goal.
Gottinger recorded her sixth shutout of the season which ties the St. Bonaventure women's soccer program record for season shutouts, previously shared by Brooke Lang who reached the total in both 1989 and 1990 as well as Nicole Markert who had six clean sheets in 2010.
The Bonnies will take on Duquesne on Sunday for their regular season finale. Prior to the game there will be a ceremony for the six players who will be graduating as seniors or graduate students. The game is slated to kickoff at 1:00 p.m.
After Thursday's result, the Bonnies remain seventh in the conference standings with 13 A-10 points – the top eight teams advance to the conference tournament.
