The St. Bonaventure University men's soccer team hits the road for a pair of matches this week. The Bonnies first make a stop in Pittsburgh to take on Duquesne Wednesday, Oct. 20 and then head to Dayton to take on the Flyers Saturday, Oct. 23.
LAST TIME OUT
The Bonnies hosted Army and La Salle last week in a pair of home contests at the Marra Athletics Complex. Last Tuesday against the Black Knights, the Bonnies scored four unanswered goals to erase an early two-goal deficit, earning a 4-2 victory. Bona's freshman Umechi Akuazaoku scored the game-tying and game-winning goals which were also the first two tallies of his career. Senior Cuneyt Vardar tied the program record for assists in a single game with three.
The Bonnies welcomed La Salle last Saturday, falling 1-0 to the Explorers. Goalkeeper Trevor Wilson made multiple saves early in the game to keep La Salle off the board but the Explorers finally broke through with a goal in the 78th minute.
ABOUT DUQUESNE
Duquesne comes into Wednesday's contest with an overall record of 6-5-1 and are 2-2-1 in Atlantic 10 play. The Dukes are coming off losses to Saint Joseph's (3-1) and VCU (4-1) but have conference victories over La Salle (3-0) and George Washington (3-1) this season. Duquesne was picked to finish 10th in the A-10 preseason poll.
Freshman Maxi Hopfer currently leads the Atlantic 10 in goals with nine and is second in scoring with 22 points. In net, Domenic Nascimben has started all 12 games for the Dukes this season, making 59 saves.
ABOUT DAYTON
The Flyers enter the week with a record of 5-7-2 overall and 2-3-0 in A-10 play. Dayton is coming off back-to-back losses to No. 11 Saint Louis (2-0) and Rhode Island (1-0) but won two straight games against George Washington (1-0) and UMass (4-2). Dayton was picked to finish third in the Atlantic 10 preseason poll.
Kingsford Adjei and Forster Ajago lead the Flyers with four goals apiece while Adjei also leads Dayton with three assists. Also with three assists this season for Dayton is Andy Sanchez. Marc Kouadio has started all 14 games in net for the Flyers and leads the A-10 with 61 saves.
IN THE HUNT
Entering the week the Bonnies and Flyers are currently tied for ninth place with six points in the Atlantic 10 standings with Duquesne and Davidson just ahead and currently are in playoff position with seven points each. The Bonnies' final regular season opponent, George Washington, sits just behind the Brown and White with four points.
UP NEXT
The Bonnies close out the regular season when they host George Washington Saturday, Oct. 30 at the Marra Athletics Complex. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
