ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – The St. Bonaventure University women's soccer team clinched its first playoff spot since 2013 with a 2-1 victory against Duquesne Sunday afternoon.
The Bonnies (7-7-4, 5-4-1 A-10) earned the No. 5 seed in the Atlantic 10 Tournament and will play at fourth-seeded UMass (5-3-2) in the first round Sunday, Oct. 31 at 1 p.m.
Graduate forward
Cristina Torres continued her phenomenal season by notching her Atlantic 10 leading 12th and 13th goals of the season to help lead the Bonnies to victory on a day where they entered competition in a win-and-in scenario.
After celebrating their seniors in a pregame ceremony, the Bonnies had some anxious moments early after the visiting Dukes jumped on top in the first minutes.
Duquesne was able to score an early goal from junior midfielder Hannah Nguyen, which was assisted by sophomore forward Jaimi Araujo.
Torres would immediately turn the tide.
In the 34th minute, Torres was able to handle a nice ball from sophomore forward
McKenna Robinson leading her into the box. The first-year Bonnies forward beat one defender and struck the ball into the back of the net for the tie.
Her second goal of the game came in the 43rd minute off a beautiful cross from freshman
Kristin Pickard. Torres was able get her left foot on the ball before the keeper could get over to attempt and stop her shot. Pickard notched her first collegiate point with this assist, and the Bonnies moved ahead with what ultimately was the game-winning goal.
Now with 13 goals on the season, Torres passed Patty Boyle (1990) and Heather McDougall (2005) for sole possession of seventh all-time in Bonaventure women's soccer history in single season goals.
The Bonnies outshot Duquesne, 13-12. Torres finished the game with six shots, four of them being on goal.
The Dukes (4-10-2, 2-7-1 A-10) were led in shots by Nguyen, sophomore forward Cami Taylor, and junior forward Lexy Kendro with three shots each.
In net, freshman goalkeeper
Chiara Gottinger finished the game with five saves for the Bonnies, bringing her Atlantic 10-leading total to 111.
VCU claimed the top seed in the tournament with a 9-1 conference record and 27 points, three points ahead of second-seeded Dayton (8-2). Saint Louis (7-3, 21 points) is the No. 3 seed while UMass earned hosting rights over the Bonnies by one point, 17 to 16. The two teams fought to a scoreless draw earlier this week at UMass.
Rhode Island (5-4-1, 16 points) is the No. 6 seed, dropping a head-to-head tiebreaker with the Bonnies via Bona's double overtime win over the Rams earlier this month. Richmond (5-5, 15 points) and Saint Joseph's (5-5, 15 points) are the final teams to get into the tournament.
Winners of the first round matchup advance to play in the semifinals Friday, Nov. 5, to be hosted by the highest remaining seed. The championship finals are set for Sunday, Nov. 7.
