DAYTON, Ohio – Freshmen
Umechi Akuazaoku and
Matthew Wrobel each scored to lead the St. Bonaventure University men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Dayton Saturday evening, earning three crucial points in the Atlantic 10 standings.
It was a slow first half for both sides until the Bonnies struck in the 43
rd minute.
Akuazaoku tracked down an errant pass, dribbled around the Dayton goalkeeper and punched home the opening goal, giving the Bonnies a 1-0 edge heading into the break. It was the third goal for the freshman in the past two weeks as his role has continued to grow as the season goes on.
The Bonnies (4-9-1, 3-4-0 A-10) would not stop there.
In the 57
th minute,
Hunter Allenbaugh played a high ball into the box to Wrobel who settled the ball and whipped in a shot to the top right corner of the net, extending the Bonnies lead to 2-0. It marks the fifth goal of the year for the first-year player, tying him with
Joshua Pulla for the team lead.
Dayton's Kingsford Adjei was shown a red card in the 79
th minute, forcing the Flyers to play a man down the rest of the way.
The Flyers would not go quietly, however.
In the 81
st minute, Dayton (5-8-3, 2-4-1 A-10) was awarded a penalty kick following a handball in the Bonnies box. Eren Elbustu stepped up and scored, cutting the Flyers deficit to 2-1.
Trevor Wilson and the Bona defense stood held strong the final nine minutes of the contest, fending off multiple Dayton attacks.
Wilson finished the night with five saves. Wrobel led the Bonnies with three shots while Pulla and
Fredrik Hansen had two shots apiece.
The Bonnies close out the regular season Saturday, Oct. 30 at home against George Washington. Kickoff is slated for 2:00 p.m. in what will be a critical game to deciding the Atlantic 10 Tournament picture.
Entering the final game of the regular season, the Bonnies are tied for eighth-place in the Atlantic 10 standings with Umass as both team have registered nine points. The Bonnies are in a crowded battle for the final spots in the upcoming conference tournament as VCU and Fordham are tied for fourth with 12 points while Davidson and Duquesne are tied for sixth with 11 points, Bona's and UMass tied for eight (9) with Dayton and GW both still alive with seven points. Eight teams will advance to the A-10 Tournament following the conclusion of next weekend's action.
