LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. – St. Bonaventure grad student Christian Chapman continued his outstanding fall season, leading the Bonnies golf team to a head-to-head victory over Siena in The Murray Cup Friday afternoon at Schuyler Meadows Golf Course.
St. Bonaventure held on to win by three shots, posting a team score of 280 under sunny skies and favorable scoring conditions. It was just two shots off the Bonnies' low round in program history and enough to hold off Siena which played its home course to a score of 283, the best in school history for the Saints. As a team, the Bonnies were 8-under for the day.
Chapman fired a tournament-best round of 6-under 66 which was three shots better than Siena leader Nolan Crowley who posted 69. For Chapman, it marked a continuation of what has been the best fall in Bonnies program history. He delivered a round of 67 or better for the fifth time this season and Friday's effort was just one shot off the program record which he set last month.
Jack Geise, who paced the Bonnies in last week's win over Army, found red figures as well with a 1-under 71. He tied for third on the leaderboard with teammate Danny Gianniny and Siena's Matt Ferrari as well as Brody Yates who all shot 71.
Jude Cummings matched his best round of the season, finishing his round at even-par 72 to give the Bonnies all four counting scores at even par or better. Siena's Jack Tobin also shot 72 to finish the scoring for the Saints.
Also in the lineup for the Bonnies were Lance Sininger (77) and Peter Byrne (84). Playing as individuals for the Bonnies were Erik Stauderman (77), Aidan Shaw (77), Andrew Lemay (81), Evan Rowane (82) and Andrew LaCongo (83).
Friday's event marked the first Murray Cup competition between St. Bonaventure and Siena in three years and moves the Bonnies to 3-0 all-time. The two teams met for the first time in 2017, renewing the tournament in 2018. The previous two tournaments were held in match play format.
The Cup is named for two ardent supporters of both schools' golf programs, 1968 St. Bonaventure graduate Ed Murray and Siena trustee John Murray. While the two Murrays are not related, they share a passion for the game of golf and their universities.
With Friday's win, the Bonnies will remain in possession of both rivalry trophies the program battles for – The Murray Cup and the Little Three Championship crown.
St. Bonaventure wraps the fall schedule Oct. 24-26 at the ODU/OBX Intercollegiate in North Carolina.
