Hokies Stop Bonnies in Hall of Fame Shootout

CHARLOTTE – Nothing went right for the St. Bonaventure men's basketball team in a forgettable 86-49 setback Friday afternoon vs. Virginia Tech in the Basketball Hall of Fame Shootout at Spectrum Center.

Dominick Welch led the Bonnies in scoring with 11 points. Quadry Adams delivered nine points off the bench on 4-of-6 shooting. Osun Osunniyi finished with eight points and four blocks, tying Andrew Nicholson, '12, for second in school history with 244 career swats.

Kyle Lofton returned after missing three games due to an ankle injury and played 25 minutes.

The afternoon was a struggle from the start as the Bonnies were held off the scoreboard for over six minutes as Virginia Tech began the game on a 13-0 run.

St. Bonaventure finished the first half shooting at an 8-from-26 clip from the field as the Hokies slowly pulled away for a 42-20 advantage at intermission.

Unfortunately for the Bonnies, the tide never turned. The Bonnies finished the day shooting just over 32 percent while the Hokies finished at a 55 percent clip, also drilling 13 3-pointers.

Hunter Cattoor was at the heart of Virginia Tech's charge, posting a game-high 21 points. Storm Murphy added 18 points.

The Bonnies are next slated to head to Boston for a date at Northeastern Wednesday. Tip-off is scheduled for noon.

QUOTES FROM HEAD COACH MARK SCHMIDT
"We didn't play well at all, we couldn't get anything inside and we took some bad shots. Once we got down 20, you're fighting and trying to do what you can do. They played really well and we played really bad."

"We wanted to keep the ball out of the paint, but they got by us off the bounce. We didn't do a great job of fronting the post. Aluma is a really good player. We had some bad rotations and the guys got hesitant. We have to do a better job defensively inside. It all starts inside out."

"Our guys have played in big games and had a lot of success, so it wasn't a matter of confidence. They started rushing us and we got on our heels. They outplayed us. We are a good team, but we have things that we need to fix. We have to understand why we had a bad game and correct those mistakes."

"Kyle wasn't 100 percent, but he's working his way back. We need him to be our quarterback."
