ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. - The late George Carter has joined a list of St. Bonaventure basketball immortals to have his number retired in the Reilly Center rafters.
St. Bonaventure has honored the memory of Carter, a 1967 graduate, by adding his name to a trio of greats to have the No. 25 retired.Â
Carter joins Essie Hollis, '77 and Earl Belcher, '81 as legendary Bonnies who wore that number as well. An in-game ceremony honoring Carter took place during the Bonnies' Dec. 4 game vs. Buffalo to formally celebrate the new banner.Â
Carter, a native of Silver Creek, N.Y. south of Buffalo in Chautauqua County, ranks 24th in Bonnies career scoring (1,322 points, 19.4 ppg) and fifth in rebounds (849). His 12.5 rebounds per game average is second only to Bob Lanier in school history.
A member of St. Bonaventure's All-Time Team selected in 2019, he starred in the American Basketball Association. He passed away last November
and was laid to rest this summer at St. Bonaventure Cemetery.Â
