MORGANTOWN, W. Va. – A second half surge from No. 4/10 West Virginia proved too tough to overcome for the St. Bonaventure men's soccer team in a 4-0 setback in Morgantown Saturday afternoon.
Bonnies goalkeeper Trevor Wilson was tested in the opening minutes, making his first stop of the game in the third minute.
In the eighth minute, the Mountaineers got in behind the Bonnies defense, but Wilson stood his ground and made an impressive save.
West Virginia, however, got on the board in the 33rd minute following a cross into Kevin Morris who headed home the opening goal.
Wilson and Jaaziel Thompson kept the Mountaineers out of the net in the 44th minute with a pair of saves. Wilson first deflected the first attempt into the air and Thompson was there to head the ball off the line, keeping it a one-goal game as the teams headed to intermission separated by just one score.
The Mountaineers tacked on an insurance goal in the 51st minute off the foot of Fredrik Jorgensen, taking a 2-0 lead, however, and then pulled away in the waning minutes.
WVU (6-0-2) proved why it is one of the best sides in the nation, securing the result with a pair of goals just nine seconds apart in the final minute of the contest to make the final score seem much more lopsided than the previous 89 minutes might suggest.
Francesco Caorsi, Fredrik Hansen, Matthew Wrobel, Cuneyt Vardar and Luca Nicastro all registered shots for the Bonnies. Wilson finished the contest with five saves.
The Bonnies return to action Saturday, Oct. 2 when they return to Atlantic 10 play with a trip to Rhode Island.
