NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Graduate student Christian Chapman continued his outstanding fall play, delivering his third top-five finish in four tournaments to lead the St. Bonaventure golf team this weekend at The Macdonald Cup hosted on the Yale Golf Course.
Chapman placed fifth on the individual leaderboard out of 81 players from 14 teams entered in the prestigious tournament. The fifth-year senior posted even par for the weekend with a 54-hole total of 210. He opened the weekend with a first round 3-under 67 on Saturday morning, his fourth round this season of 67 or better. He played the par-70 6,795-yard layout in 1-over 71 in the afternoon round before closing the weekend with 72 on Sunday morning.
For the weekend, the reigning Atlantic 10 Golfer of the Week drained 11 birdies, just one off the high total for all players in the tournament with only Will Anderson of Michigan and Brian Ma of Harvard carding more, each with 12. Anderson took medalist honors with 6-under 204, three strokes better than Ma and Michigan's Hunter Thompson. The only other player in red figures was Yale's Blake Brantley who played his home course in 2-under for the weekend.
Previously this fall, Chapman won the season-opening Little Three Championship before placing second at the VCU Shootout last time out. His 210 total will stand fifth all-time in a 54-hole tournament as part of the Bonnies record books, five shots off the record he set at VCU less than two weeks ago.
Danny Gianniny ranked second on the team for the week, posting rounds of 72-73-75 for a 220 total. He recorded seven birdies over his three rounds, playing the par 5s in 2-under for the week with a 4.67 average, one of the best in the field. Gianniny came home in a tie for 24th on the individual leaderboard, his third top-25 in four tournaments this season thus far.
As a team, the Bonnies finished ninth out of 14 squads. St. Bonaventure totaled 293 in the opening round for its best of the week, followed by scores of 298 and 300 for an 891 final to tie with Hartford, three strokes better than Bucknell. Yale sailed to victory in its host event with a team final of 846, four ahead of Michigan (850), with Harvard (858), St. John's (875) and Penn (876) rounding out the top five.
Also in the lineup for the Bonnies were Erik Stauderman (80-77-73/230) and Jack Geise (74-77-80/231).
Next up for the Bonnies are a pair of head-to-head dual matches. First up, SBU will take on Army at Sleepy Hollow Country Club this Friday. The Bonnies and Franciscan sister school Siena will then renew their Murray Cup rivalry Oct. 8 before the final full tournament of the fall at the ODU/OBX Intercollegiate Oct. 24-26.
