BRONX, N.Y. – The St. Bonaventure University women's soccer team scored a come-from-behind 2-1 victory at Fordham on Sunday afternoon for Bona's first win in Atlantic 10 Conference play.
The Rams (2-7-2, 0-2-1 A-10) took a 1-0 first half lead in the 28th minute on a goal from senior defender Kendall Dandridge, which came off a corner kick from junior forward Kristen Cocozza.
The Bonnies (3-5-3, 1-2-0) and Fordham both tallied seven shots in the first half. St. Bonaventure had two good scoring chances, both off of free kicks. Junior forward Claire Davis received the free kick inside the box and had a shot that went off the crossbar in the 34th minute, while fellow junior
Christine Napoli took a free kick shot that was saved by Fordham, this was the lone shot on net for Bonaventure in the first half. In net, freshman
Chiara Gottinger tallied three saves for the Bonnies. Gottinger made a diving save in the 29th minute off of an open field shot by Fordham to keep the game 1-0.
The first half of this game was very physical between both teams. The physical play resulted in a major turning point of the contest when Fordham sophomore defender Schae Groton was assessed a red card in the 41st minute.
St. Bonaventure was able to take advantage of being a man-up in the second half.
Graduate forward
Cristina Torres continued her strong season with an unassisted goal in the 70th minute to tie the game at 1-1. Torres was able to send the ball with her left foot into the back of the net, notching her sixth goal of the season.
The game-winning goal came from sophomore forward
Alexa Martinos in the 81st minute.
Martinos scored her first career collegiate goal off a beautiful free kick by
Kenzie Tarmino that was headed into the box and allowed Martinos to dribble past the goalkeeper for the deciding tally.
The Bonnies finished the game with 13 shots and four of those were on net, while Fordham finished with 12 shots and five of those were on net. Torres led the way for Bonaventure with four shots. Dandrige led Fordham with four shots, while junior forward Caitlin Kennedy tallied three shots and all of them were on goal.
Gottinger had another strong game finishing with four saves for Bonaventure. Fordham sophomore Serena Mensah finished the game two saves.
St. Bonaventure looks to carry the momentum over when they go back on the road on Thursday to take on George Mason. The game is slated to begin at 7:00 p.m.
