Hutchison’s Second Half Goal Not Enough as Bonnies Fall At GW, 2-1

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The St. Bonaventure University women's soccer team fell 2-1 at George Washington Thursday evening.

The Colonials (6-3-6, 1-3-3 A-10) opened up the scoring in the second half after a scoreless opening period.

In the 49th minute, Lauren Prentice sent a ball to the front of the net to teammate Sammy Newman who fired a shot over the head of goalkeeper Chiara Gottinger for a 1-0 lead.

George Washington added the eventual game-winner in the 61st when Elizabeth Cruz collected a deflection off a corner kick and deposited the ball into the back of the net.

The Bonnies (2-7-6, 0-7-1 A-10) cut the deficit to one goal in the 66th minute thanks to the foot of senior Rachel Hutchison.

Clare Davis sent a pass back to McKenna Robinson who made a touch pass to Hutchison, then after one touch, Hutchison beat the Colonials' goalkeeper for her first goal of the season.

Unfortunately for the Bonnies, that 2-1 tally would stand for the remainder of the full time.

Gottinger tied her career-high with 13 saves Thursday afternoon. She previously tied that mark against Niagara and UMass this season.

The sophomore goalkeeper now sits tied for eighth all-time in Bonnies single-season history with Margaret Reif (1996) for most saves in a season with 134, passing Lauren Malcolm who made 128 saves in 2018. Also, she passed Malcolm and Karen Cunningham (1999), both of whom were 10th on the all-time list with 123 saves in their respective seasons.

Rachel Sorkenn tallied a team-high six shots for George Washington, while four St. Bonaventure players each recorded a shot.

The Bonnies will return home for a matchup against Richmond this Sunday.

Prior to Sunday's contest, nine graduating student-athletes will be honored as part of Senior Day: Payton Powers, Haylee Smith, Christine Napoli, Rachel Hutchison, Amber Achladis, Cristina Torres, Maya Palmer, Clare Davis, and Kenzie Tarmino.
