ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – Graduate forward
Cristina Torres delivered a first half penalty kick goal which ended up being the game-winner in her final game at Marra Athletics Complex Sunday against Richmond.
Following a pregame ceremony honoring this year's graduating class under sunny skies on a brilliant fall day, Torres would score the difference-maker early in the contest.
In the 22
nd minute, Torres was fouled inside the box, which led to her lining up a penalty kick past the Spiders' goalkeeper to take a 1-0 lead going into the final 45 minutes of play.
The Bonnies (3-7-6, 1-7-1 A-10) were able to hold off the second half pressure of the Richmond offense behind sophomore goalkeeper
Chiara Gottinger.
The Spiders took 17 shots and possessed the ball for most of the second frame.
Gottinger held strong, though, setting a new career-high for saves in a game. The second-year keeper completed a clean sheet with 14 stops Sunday afternoon. She was key in the 57
th minute when she made back-to-back saves, one of which was a diving stop on a Spiders' attacker in open space.
She now sits sixth all-time for most saves in a season by a Bonnies goalkeeper with 148. During Sunday's match, she passed Karen Cunningham who made 140 saves in 1998 and Brooke Lang who tallied 143 saves in 1990.
Sunday's game marks Gottinger's fourth shutout of the season, bringing her career total to 10 shutouts. In the program record book, she passes Megan Junker (2010-13), who recorded 9.5 shutouts in her respective seasons.
Sunday's result marks the first conference win for the Brown and White this season.
Richmond (3-9-3, 2-4-2) received a team-high nine shots from Molly Weirman, while
McKenna Robinson,
Rachel Hutchison, and
Lydia Choban each take two shots for St. Bonaventure.
In net Taylor Montague made three saves for the Spiders.
Prior to Sunday's contest, St. Bonaventure honored seniors Torres, Hutchison,
Payton Powers,
Haylee Smith,
Christine Napoli,
Amber Achladis,
Maya Palmer,
Clare Davis, and
Kenzie Tarmino.
The Bonnies will conclude their season with a trip to Pittsburgh to take on Duquesne. Kickoff on Thursday, Oct. 20 is slated for 7:00 p.m.
