CLEVELAND – The St. Bonaventure University women's basketball team dropped the opening game of the Viking Invitational against Bellarmine, 72-65, Wednesday evening at the Wolstein Center.
I'yanna Lops finished with a career-high 22 points on 9-of-17 shooting from the field to lead the Bonnies offensively. Nadechka Laccen added 17 points and seven rebounds while Taylor Napper chipped in 12 points.
The Bonnies pulled within one, 49-48, following a Claire Cody 3-pointer off a feed from Kaitlyn Parker with eight minutes remaining in the contest.
Bellarmine's Cam Browning was fouled on the following possession, hitting both shots at the free throw line and putting the Knights back up three.
Laccen converted a pair of free throws with 2:58 left on the clock to bring the Bonnies within three, 60-57.
The Bonnies would not get closer as they were forced to foul with time winding down. Bellarmine made six free throws down the stretch to ice the game and earn the victory.
Bellarmine (1-3) came out of halftime carrying the momentum, seeing its lead grow to as many as 11, 46-35, in the third quarter.
The Knights shot over 50 percent from the floor in the first half to take a 27-21 advantage into the halftime break.
Bellarmine grabbed the momentum early, using a 9-0 first quarter run to take a 13-2 lead midway through the opening period.
The Bonnies (1-3), however, used a 9-0 spurt of their own to pull back within two early in the second quarter.
Hayley Harrison scored 21 points to lead Bellarmine while Browning added 20.
The Bonnies are back in action Friday, Nov. 25 against Georgia State as the Viking Invitational continues. Tip is slated for 7:00 p.m.
GAME NOTES
- The Bonnies finished the night shooting 34.3 percent (23-for-67) from the floor while Bellarmine shot 58.7 percent (27-for-46) from the field.
- Kaitlyn Parker led the Bonnies with four assists in 13 minutes off the bench.
- The Bonnies' eight turnovers represent a season-low. Bona's entered the contest averaging 25.7 turnovers per game. SBU forced 22 Bellarmine turnovers Wednesday.
