Bonnies Fall at Rhode Island, 67-54

KINGSTON, R.I. – The St. Bonaventure University women's basketball team fell to Rhode Island, 67-54, Wednesday evening at the Ryan Center.

Asianae Johnson led the Bonnies with 17 points on 8-of-13 shooting to go along with six rebounds. I'yanna Lops chipped in 12 points for the Bonnies while Tori Harris added 11 tallies.

The Rhode Island defense clamped down in the second half after allowing the Bonnies to shoot over 50 percent in the first half.

Twenty-four turnovers would hamper Bona's upset effort.

A four-minute Bonnies scoring drought in the fourth quarter allowed the Rams to pull away for good Wednesday.

The Rams (21-5, 12-1 A-10) held the Bonnies without a field goal for over four minutes in the third, taking a double digit lead, 54-44, late in the third quarter.

Johnson found Lops on the wing in the second period who spotted up from three, tying the game at 20-20.

The Rams, however, went on a 9-0 run that forced the Bonnies to call a timeout.

After falling behind by 10, the Bonnies (12-14, 4-11 A-10) ended the first half on a 6-0 run backed by three straight baskets from Johnson, pulling within four, 39-35, at halftime.

In the first quarter, Ene Adams' baseline jumper as the buzzer sounded pulled the Bonnies within one, 16-15, after the first 10 minutes.

The Bonnies return home for the regular season finale Saturday, Feb. 26 against George Mason. Tip is slated for 12:00 p.m. Prior to the start of Saturday's game, the Bonnies will honor Asianae Johnson and Tori Harris on Senior Day.

GAME NOTES

  • The Bonnies finished the night shooting 48.9 percent (22-for-45) from the field and were 37.5 percent (6-for-16) from beyond the arc.
  • Rhode Island outrebounded the Bonnies, 33-23.
  • Ene Adams returned to the Bonnies lineup for the first time since Feb. 12, scoring eight points and pulling down seven rebounds in 27 minutes.
