FAIRFAX, Va. – The St. Bonaventure University softball team dropped an Atlantic 10 doubleheader on the road at George Mason Monday afternoon.
The Patriots (11-6, 3-0 A-10) grabbed game one, 4-1, and then won the second half of the twinbill, 6-2.
Game 1 – George Mason 4, St. Bonaventure 1
The Patriots wasted no time in getting on the board, scoring on an RBI single in the bottom of the first.
George Mason added a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the second off back-to-back RBI singles, making the score 3-0 after two.
The Patriots plated a fourth run in the third when Rachel Warrens belted an RBI double.
Olivia Moon's RBI groundout brought around Kennedy Haberl to score, pulling the Bonnies back within three, 4-1, in the top of the fourth.
George Mason start Carly Cooper would shut down any attempt the Bonnies had at a rally in game one, earning the complete game win.
Elizabeth Lis earned the start in game one, working 1.2 innings and scattering three hits. Emily Phalen tossed 4.1 innings in relief and struck out seven Patriots batters.
Game 2 – George Mason 6, St. Bonaventure 2
George Mason was first to strike once again in game two Monday afternoon, posting a four-spot in the bottom of the third on three RBI singles and a run-scoring groundout.
Game two starter Tierney Fitzgerald helped herself out in the top of the fourth inning, belting an RBI double down the right field line, scoring Olivia Whitecar and making the score 4-1.
The Patriots tacked on two insurance runs in the bottom of the fifth off a pair of RBI doubles.
Moon tried sparking a St. Bonaventure rally in the top of the six with an RBI double to centerfield, cutting the deficit to 6-2.
That is as close as the Bonnies (1-11, 0-3 A-10) would get as Cheyenne Van Pelt and Jordan Anderson shut the door on the Bonaventure rally.
Fitzgerald pitched 4.2 innings in game two, allowing eight hits. Phalen and Ally Haskell combined to work the final 2.1 innings of play.
The Bonnies are back in action Saturday, March 19 on the road at Dayton.
