BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh spoiled a solid start from Bonnies senior left-hander
Liam Devine, pulling ahead in the late innings for a 5-1 victory Friday afternoon.
The Hawks grabbed a third inning run for a 1-0 edge, but Bona would even the score in the fourth on a run-scoring groundout from
Matthew Williams after a hit by
Danny Manion.
A two-out double in the fifth for the Hawks broke the tie and the 2-1 score remained until the seventh.
Devine coaxed two groundouts to begin the seventh, but found trouble after going north of 100 pitches. After going to the bullpen, the Hawks broke the game open on a three-run homer from Gerard Sweeney.
That left Devine with a final line not representative of how well the southpaw threw on the day. He finished with 6.2 innings, four runs on nine hits while striking out seven and walking none.
Lehigh's southpaw, Luke Rettig, got the win with seven innings of one run ball, striking out seven with one walk.
Jagger Nucci had a pair of hits for the Bonnies.
The two teams renew acquaintances Saturday for a doubleheader beginning at noon.
