FORT MYERS, Fla. – Florida Gulf Coast got past the St. Bonaventure baseball team, 13-5, Wednesday night as the Bonnies continued their spring break trip in the Sunshine State.
St. Bonaventure had a chance to break through first with a pair of two-out base runners in the second, highlighted by a double from Danny Manion, but could not pick up a run.
In the home half of the second, FGCU made two-out magic as the Eagles scored six times after starter Ryan O'Connell retired the first five batters he faced on the night before running into trouble.
In the third, the Bonnies loaded the bases with no outs following a double from Jarett Cope, a walk to Branden Myers and an Eagles fielding error. Unfortunately for the Bonnies, a pair of strikeouts and an infield pop up ended the threat.
FGCU (7-2) would play tack on from that point, adding two in the third, one in the fourth and three in the fifth to take control.
The Bonnies picked up some offense in the seventh as Thomas Grilli singled home both Jackson DeJohn and Garrett Boldt before a run-scoring single from Brendyn Stillman. Grilli then scored on a wild pitch and Stillman came across on a groundout.
Grilli was credited with a pair of runs batted in while DeJohn also collected a double.
The Bonnies (0-5) are back in action Friday night to start a three-game series at Alabama State.
