YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The St. Bonaventure University softball team split a midweek doubleheader on the road at Youngstown State Tuesday afternoon.
A three-run sixth inning for the Bonnies in game one, defeating the Penguins, 5-4. Youngstown State rebounded to take the nightcap, 3-2, in eight innings.
Game 1 – St. Bonaventure 5, Youngstown State 4
With two outs and a runner on first in the bottom of the seventh, Conchetta Rinaldi lined one into the left-center field gap but Bonnies center fielder Samantha Moll was able to track it down, making a diving catch to give Bona's the victory.Â
Brooke Bobbey kicked off the action Tuesday with a leadoff single. After stealing second, Bobbey advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt from Kennedy Haberl. Bobbey was able to cross home during the next at-bat on a passed ball, giving the Bonnies an early lead.
The Penguins, however, quickly answered with two runs of their own in the bottom of the first when Avrey Schumacher slapped a two-RBI single to center field, giving the hosts a 2-1 edge.
Bobbey continued to be a menace on the basepaths after reaching on a hit by pitch in the top of the third. The sophomore outfielder stole second but the throw bounced away and into the outfield, allowing Bobbey to score all the way from first, tying the game.
Shannon Costello's pinch-hit two-run single just over the third baseman's head gave the Bonnies a 4-2 lead in the top of the sixth inning.
Up next was Olivia Moon who singled to right field, scoring the pinch runner Macy Miller and giving the visitors a three-run cushion late in the contest.
Schumacher came up big for the Penguins again in the bottom of the sixth, doubling home a pair to cut the Bonnies lead to 5-4.
Bonnies starter Emily Phelan settled in after allowing the two runs in the first, retiring the next 12 Youngstown State batters before a leadoff single in the bottom of the sixth. The sophomore right handed pitcher struck out five in the complete game victory, allowing just the two earned runs.Â
Game 2 – Youngstown State 3, St. Bonaventure 2 (8 Innings)
The Bonnies scored in the top of the first inning once again after a run-scoring groundout from Grace Perechinsky.
Moon doubled home Bobbey in the top of the fifth to extend the Bonnies lead to 2-0.Â
The Penguins, however, came to life in the bottom of the sixth.Â
Rinaldi singled through the right side, scoring one and cutting the deficit in half. Schumacher reached a fielder's choice three batters later, tying the game at 2-2.
The game would head to extras with neither team being able to push across the winning run.Â
With the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the eighth, Hailey Niederkohr singled home the game-winning run, giving the hosts a 3-2 victory.
Madison Stewart was 2-for-4 with a double for the Brown and White.
Ally Haskell tossed a complete game for the Bonnies, scattering seven hits and striking out three.
The Bonnies make their 2022 home debut Friday, March 25 against George Washington with a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m.
