ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – The St. Bonaventure University softball team fell in a pair of games to reigning Atlantic 10 regular season champion George Washington Friday afternoon at Joyce Field.
The Colonials (15-10, 8-0 A-10) offense exploded for an 18-2 victory in game one and grabbed game two from the Bonnies (3-16, 1-7 A-10), 8-0.
Game 1 – George Washington 18, St. Bonaventure 2 (5 Innings)
Haley Strang got things started early for the Bonnies with a first-pitch solo home run to left field.
The Colonials, however, answered in the top of the second with, plating four runs to take a 4-1 edge.
GW added six more runs in the top of the fourth to take complete control of the game.
Eight runs in the top of the fifth inning blew the game wide open for the Colonials.
Grace Walker doubled home Juanita Wolak in the bottom of the fifth to make the score, 18-2, but it was far too late to rally.
Emily Phelan got the start, scattering six hits in 3.0 innings of work. Elizabeth Lis tossed 2.0 innings in relief.
Game 2 – George Washington 8, St. Bonaventure 0 (5 Innings)
The Colonials took an early lead with a run in the top of the first and then added another in the top of the second, taking a 2-0 advantage.
Alessandra Ponce blasted a two-run home run in the top of the third to double the GW lead.
George Washington plated four runs in the top of the sixth to earn the doubleheader sweep.
Ally Haskell started game two for the Bonnies, pitching 5.0 innings and surrendering 10 hits. Tierney Fitzgerald worked an inning in relief, striking out a pair.
The Bonnies and Colonials wrap up the three-game series Saturday, March 26 at 12:00 p.m.
