ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – St. Bonaventure started on a dominant 9-1 run and never relinquished control in a convincing 15-9 victory over Manhattan Saturday afternoon at the Marra Athletics Complex.
The Bonnies have won five in a row and improve to 7-2 overall on the season and 2-0 in MAAC play.
Three Bonnies registered hat tricks as Jake Rosa scored four goals while Sean Westley and Jackson Rose tallied three apiece. Rosa posted seven total points while Westley logged six.
Freshman Trent Grainger also set the program record at the faceoff dot, winning 18 faceoffs on the day. Junior Brady Wijbrandts tied the program single-game record with 10 groundballs.
Four-time MAAC Defensive Player of the Week Brett Dobson impressed again in the cage with 15 saves, winning the head-to-head matchup between the league's top two goalies as Manhattan graduate student Brendan Krebs entered the year as the MAAC preseason goalkeeper of the year.
Manhattan (3-5, 1-1) scored the game's first goal on a strike from Jack Nicolosi less than three minutes in, but the Bonnies immediately took control.
Bona's ran off the next nine goals over a 12-minute span spanning the final 10 minutes of the first quarter and first two minutes of the second.
Austin Blumbergs started the Bona run with his 14th goal of the year at the 9:54 mark of the first period. Rosa found the net three times before the end of the opening 15 minutes as the hosts grabbed a 7-1 cushion.
Rose and Westley scored twice for the Bonnies before the second quarter was 90 seconds old as the lead stretched to eight.
Manhattan tried to claw its way back into the game with a 3-0 run, but the Bonnies ultimately ran to halftime with an 11-5 advantage as Rose scored again just 1:28 before intermission.
Bona's started the second half with goals from Rosa and Zach Owens to stretch the advantage to 13-5.
That score would remain until 3:30 left in the third as Manhattan began to chip away, pulling within 13-9 with 6:59 remaining in the game.
The Jaspers would get no closer as Cian Collins and Conor Murphy ended any thoughts of a rally with the final two goals of the day.
Bona's won 19Â of 27 faceoff attempts in a program-best day.
Krebs made 10 saves in net for the Jaspers while Liam Walshe scored three goals.
St. Bonaventure has a bye week next week before returning to action Saturday, April 9 vs. Monmouth.
