OPENING FACEOFF

  • St. Bonaventure and Cleveland State will play a unique home-and-home series with the Bonnies hosting the front end of the doubleheader Friday afternoon at 4 p.m. before the two teams meet in Cleveland Sunday at noon. Both games will air on ESPN+.
  • This weekend's games are the final non-conference tuneups for the Bonnies before MAAC play begins next weekend at Marist.

DEFEND HOME TURF
St. Bonaventure has become a very good home team in the past two seasons. The Bonnies have won their first two games at the Marra Athletics Complex so far in 2022 – a 13-12 win over Bellarmine Feb. 22 and a 21-0 victory over Hampton last Saturday. Dating back to last year, the Bonnies have won six straight on home turf and six of seven overall the past two seasons.

ONE FOR THE RECORD BOOKS
The Bonnies set the majority of their program records last weekend as they recorded the only shutout in Division I this year, 21-0, over Hampton. As a team, SBU set school records for goals (21), shots (54), groundballs (43) and number of goal-scorers (11) with their first-ever shutout.

GRAINGER, WESTLEY EARN MAAC WEEKLY HONORS
A pair of St. Bonaventure men's lacrosse players earned honors Monday with the announcement of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) weekly awards as senior Sean Westley was named Offensive Player of the Week and freshman Trent Grainger the league's Faceoff Specialist of the Week.

Westley set the program record for single-game points as he tallied nine in a 21-0 win over Hampton this past Saturday. The Whitby, Ontario native takes the top MAAC offensive honors for the second consecutive week and third time for his career.

In two games last week, the Grainger native won 22 faceoffs and scooped up eight groundballs with a 75 percent win percentage.

Against Hampton Saturday, he went 13-1 in faceoff opportunities with seven groundballs. His 13 faceoff wins were just one off the program record he shares a tie of. At No. 19 Richmond earlier in the week, he also won nine faceoffs.

It is the second consecutive week Westley has been MAAC Offensive Player of the Week while Grainger becomes the first MAAC Faceoff Specialist of the Week in program history; that award was created prior to this season.

IN THE RANKINGS
St. Bonaventure ranks highly in a number of stats both in the MAAC and in the nation:

  • The Bonnies lead the MAAC in assists per game (8), opponent clear percentage (80%), points per game (19.4), scoring defense (9.8) and offense (11.4 goals per game).
  • Sean Westley leads the MAAC in points per game by nearly a full point per contest at 4.6 per game, ahead of Manhattan's Kyle Gucwa with 3.8. Westley ranks 20th nationally in points per game.
  • Jackson Rose leads the country in shot percentage (68.4%).
  • Brett Dobson leads the MAAC and is third nationally in save percentage (63.0%).
  • Trent Grainger stands second in the MAAC in faceoff winning percentage (55.1%).

FIRST TIME GOAL-SCORERS
Multiple Bonnies scored their first career collegiate goals in last Saturday's win over Hampton. Cam Germain, Drew Kenney, Connor Steria and Joey Paterno all found the back of the net for career goal No. 1 in the victory.

ABOUT CLEVELAND STATE

  • This season the Vikings have begun 1-3 with their lone win coming against MAAC opponent Canisius, 12-10, last weekend. CSU opened up the season with a 17-9 loss at Ohio State and setbacks vs. Mercer (11-9) in their only home game so far as well as at No. 17 Michigan (13-5).
  • Gannon Matthews (10) and Ryan Haigh (7) lead the team in goals this season, while Jason Sullivan is the assist leader with eight.
  • In net, Cameron Logan has recorded 53 saves on the year.
  • Cleveland State was selected to finish sixth in the 2022 ASUN Men's Lacrosse Preseason Coaches Poll. The Vikings previously played as an independent but are one of six charter members of the ASUN men's lacrosse league this year, joining Air Force, Utah, Robert Morris, Bellarmine and Detroit Mercy. Last season, CSU finished 3-7 overall. The Vikings joined the Division I ranks in 2017.

SERIES HISTORY
The Bonnies and Vikings have met once previously when CSU took an 18-5 win at home April 6, 2019 in the Bonnies' first season at the Division I level. The teams were slated for a return trip to Bonaventure in 2020, but that game was canceled due to the pandemic.
