ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – Despite great pitching from the duo of Ally Haskell and Emily Phelan, the St. Bonaventure University softball team could not get the bats going themselves and dropped a non-conference doubleheader to Youngstown State Wednesday at Joyce Field.
The Penguins and Bonnies battled to extra innings in game one before Youngstown State pushed across two runs in the top of the ninth, claiming the 3-1 win. YSU completed the sweep with a 1-0 decision in game two.
Olivia Moon led the Bonnies offensively, tallying four hits in Wednesday's games.
Game 1 – Youngstown State 3, St. Bonaventure 1 (9 Innings) – Box Score (PDF)
The Bonnies and Penguins were deadlocked at 1-1 heading into the ninth inning of game one Wednesday.
Youngstown State broke the tie with a single up the middle and added another run on a safety squeeze a few batters later, taking a two-run lead.
The Penguins were able to shut down the Bonnies in order, claiming the extra-inning victory.
YSU started the scoring Wednesday in the top of the fifth inning off an RBI double to right field.
The Bonnies were able to tie the score late in the contest when pinch runner Alyssa Ramarge came around to score on an error after Madison Stewart singled up the middle.
Ally Haskell tossed all nine innings for the Bonnies, striking out a career-high nine batters and allowing just two earned runs.
Game 2 – Youngstown State 1, St. Bonaventure 0 – Box Score (PDF)
The Penguins got the scoring started early, striking on an RBI double to right-center field for a 1-0 lead.
The one run was all Youngstown State needed to earn the doubleheader sweep.
The Bonnies best chance to score came in the bottom of the sixth, putting runners on first and third with two outs but were unable to push across the tying run.
Emily Phelan settled in after the first inning, striking out a career-high nine Penguins batters and walked just two.
The Bonnies head out on the road Friday, April 15 to begin a three-game set at UMass. First pitch is slated for 2:00 p.m.
