AMHERST, Mass. – The St. Bonaventure University softball team dropped an Atlantic 10 doubleheader on the road at UMass Friday afternoon.
UMass walked off with game one in the bottom of the seventh, 3-2. The Minutewomen carried momentum in to game two, taking the nightcap, 9-4.
Game 1 – UMass 3, St. Bonaventure 2 – Box Score (PDF)
UMass (14-23, 7-6 A-10) plated three runs in the bottom of the seventh to walk off with the game one victory.
The Minutewomen broke through on the scoreboard on an RBI triple off the bat of Grace Cadden. Bella Pantoja plated the second UMass run with a single up the middle to pull the game level at 2-2
With the bases loaded and one out, Chloe Whittier was hit by a pinch that scored the game-winning run from third.
The Bonnies were able to take a 2-0 lead in the top of the fifth, scoring the first run of the frame off a Shannon Costello single to center. Three batters later, Olivia Moon reached on an error, bringing across the second run of the inning.
Ally Haskell went the distance for the Bonnies, striking out three and scattering just six hits.
Game 2 – UMass 9, St. Bonaventure 4 – Box Score (PDF)
The Minutewomen wasted no time opening the scoring, plating three runs in the bottom of the first inning. UMass scored its first run on a fielder's choice and Kristina Day singled home two more, taking the early lead.
Emily Whalen added a fourth UMass run with a single up the middle in the bottom of the third.
The Bonnies finally cut into the deficit in the top of the fourth, scoring a pair on back-to-back RBI singles from Madison Stewart and Grace Walker. Pinch hitter Elyse Graham worked a bases loaded walk three batters later, making it a one-run ballgame.
UMass, however, drew a bases loaded walk of its own in the bottom half of the fourth, extending the lead back to two, 5-3.
The Minutewomen tacked on two more insurance runs in the bottom of the fifth on a run scoring single and an RBI groundout.
The hosts put the game out of reach in the bottom of the sixth, scoring two in the inning and making it a six-run game.
The Bonnies (7-29, 1-16 A-10) tried sparking a rally in the top of the seventh when Haley Strang scored from third when Grace Perechinsky reached on a fielder's choice, bringing the Brown and White back within five, 9-4.
That is all the closer they would get as UMass got the final out, earning the doubleheader sweep.
Emily Phelan earned the game two start, working 5.2 innings and fanned four. Haskell recorded the final out of the sixth on a strikeout in relief.
The Bonnies and the Minutewomen wrap up the three-game series Saturday afternoon at 12:00 p.m.
