Box Score 3 ARLINGTON, Va. – The St. Bonaventure baseball team dropped a three-game series at George Washington to begin Atlantic 10 play over the weekend.
Game 1 – GW 12, SBU 1
The Colonials (15-13, 3-0 A-10) jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning and never looked back.
After the four-run first, GW added a run in the fourth and three more in the sixth to pull away.
Bona's got its lone run on a single from Jack Putney in the eighth, plating Garrett Boldt.
Harrison Cohen (4-3) was excellent on the hill for GW, allowing just a run on four hits in eight innings while striking out 11 and walking one.
Game 2 – GW 10, SBU 2
The final score ended up deceiving after a close contest until the late innings.
GW led 1-0 after one, but a sacrifice fly from Matthew Williams plated Pierce Hendershot for the tying run in the third.
The Colonials took a 3-1 lead in the fifth, but the Bonnies answered with a run-scoring single from Jagger Nucci in their next trip to the plate. Bona's threatened for more, but a liner off the bat of Putney landed in the mitt of the GW shortstop, resulting in a double play as the threat was erased.
Freshman Bryce Hediger was outstanding, allowing just two earned runs on five hits in six innings while striking out four and walking one.
Unfortunately for the Bonnies, the Colonials broke the game open in the late innings against the Bonaventure bullpen.
Ben Berger got on base four times, drawing two walks and logging two hits and also adding a stolen base.
Game 3 – GW 15, SBU 2
GW jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first and never looked back in the finale Sunday.
The Colonials tacked on two in the fourth before the Bonnies broke through to make it a 5-1 score in the sixth following singles from Boldt and Nucci and a sac fly by Putney.
The hosts would break the game open, however, with seven in the home half of the inning.
Boldt went 3-for-3 at the plate and Williams added two hits as well. Kyle Caringi struck out four in 3.1 innings on the hill.
St. Bonaventure finally makes its home debut Tuesday in a non-conference game vs. Binghamton.
