WASHINGTON, D.C. – Freshman
Fiona McGovern had one of the top-scoring days in Bonnies program history, exploding for six goals at George Washington. Despite her scoring output, and a second half comeback, GW held on for a 13-10 win Sunday over the St. Bonaventure women's lacrosse team.
The Corlandt Manor, N.Y. native's six goals ties her for fourth in St. Bonaventure University women's lacrosse history with
Destinee Johnson and Laura Spalding, an SBU Athletics Hall of Fame member.
Johnson was the last player to score six goals for the Bonnies in a single game, doing so at Central Connecticut State University on Feb. 16, 2020. The program record is eight.
McGovern was very efficient Sunday afternoon, scoring six goals on eight shots. Also, she scooped up two groundballs.
George Washington (4-8, 2-2 A-10) took a commanding 9-2 lead by halftime with both Bonaventure first half goals coming off the stick of McGovern.
With a seven-goal deficit entering the second half, St. Bonaventure was able to swing the momentum into its favor.
The Bonnies scored five third period goals compared to the Colonials' two.
St. Bonaventure (1-9, 0-4 A-10) would add three more goals in the final period, but it was not enough as George Washington was able to add two goals to take a 13-10 lead and run out the clock to secure the victory.
McGovern tallied four second half goals, while
Nora Anderson (two goals),
Abby Hiltz, and
Madison Mundenar each contributed to the Bonnies comeback attempt.
McGovern's sixth goal of the day brought the Bonnies within 11-10 with over six minutes remaining. Tori Hampton would score 45 seconds later, though, ending the Bonnies run and giving GW breathing room. The Colonials would not allow the visitors to score again.
Mundenar and Hiltz each added an assist for the Bonnies.
Junior
Teri Manzelli was also key for the Bonnies in the second half, causing a team-high three turnovers and scooping up three groundballs.
The Colonials were led by Tori Hampton (three goals, three assists) and Katelyn Lederman (three goals).
In the cage,
Ashley Herrick recorded seven saves for the Bonnies, while Megan Patrick finished the game with eight stops to earn the win for GW.
In the team stats category, St. Bonaventure outshot George Washington (32-25), and were narrowly edged in groundballs (14-15) and caused turnovers (8-9).
The Bonnies will come back home to take on La Salle Friday, April 8. Game time is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
