ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – The St. Bonaventure University women's lacrosse team dropped a heartbreaker, 12-11, against La Salle Friday afternoon at the Marra Athletics Complex.
The final 10 minutes of the game was a back-and-forth affair between both squads.
The Bonnies scored the first five goals of the fourth period to lead by a pair, 11-9, with five minutes to go in the game.
Abby Hiltz tied the score at nine apiece with 9:36 left in the fourth period, the assist coming from
Fiona McGovern.
McGovern would later give the Bonnies a 10-9 lead, which was their first edge since the game was just 50 seconds old.
Maddie Mazur gave Bonaventure a two-goal lead for off a free-position shot with 5:36 left in the game..
Kassi Hogan and
Nora Anderson each free-position shot goals in the final period.
The momentum would swing, however, as the Explorers scored the final three goals of the game.
Maddie Henderson secured the 12-11 victory for La Salle, scoring with 2:28 to play to break the deadlock. The Explorers won the ensuing draw and began to run out the clock. The Bonnies got one more chance as
Sarah Owens had a free-position shot with 1:25 left, but her shot was denied by La Salle goalie Kelli McGroarty. The shot momentarily got away from the keeper, but she was able to scoop it up just before crossing the goal line to preserve the lead.
The Bonnies struck first with an early first period goal from
Kassi Hogan.
La Salle would go on to score the next five goals to take a 5-1 lead going into the second period.
St. Bonaventure (1-10, 0-5 A-10) closed the first half with four scores.
Sarah Owens,
Rebecca Howe (two goals), and Mazur each tallied goals to tie the score at five.
Hogan, Mazur, Howe, and Owens each scored two goals on the afternoon for the Bonnies.
Sophomore
Abby Hiltz finished the game with two assists to bring her season total to 25 points on the year.
In the cage
Ashley Herrick made 16 saves to bring her season total to 120.
For La Salle (4-9, 2-3 A-10) Emily Johnston (four goals) and Maddie Henderson (three goals/two assists) were the team leaders.
Julia Dellaratta began the game in net and made six saves, while McGroarty played the second half, tallying four saves to earn the win in the cage.
The Bonnies will be on the road for a three-game stretch beginning on Sunday with a matchup at Davidson. The game is slated to start at 1:00 p.m.
