LEWISTON, N.Y. – Niagara built an early lead and withstood a Bonnies rally effort for a 5-4 victory Tuesday afternoon.
The Purple Eagles pushed across a run in the first, then added four in the second for a 5-1 advantage after two frames.
Danny Manion got two runs back with a blast to left for his fourth home run of the year in the fifth.
Bona's golden opportunity came in the sixth. Back-to-back singles from Ben Berger and Aaron Herbst and a hit batter loaded the bases with no outs. A double play ball forced home a run, but the Bonnies could get no more.
That 5-4 tally would last through the final out.
Bona's bullpen worked 7.1 scoreless frames without a walk thanks to work from Gabe Watts (2.1 IP, 2 H, 2 K), Cody Shimp (2.0 IP, 2 H, 3 K), Rushil Bhat (1.0 IP, 1 H, 1 K) and Jackson DeJohn (1.0 IP, 2 H).
Jake Biscailuz and Christian Szablewski each had two hits.
Dawson Bailey drove in three runs for Niagara out of the leadoff spot.
The Bonnies are back in action Thursday at home vs. Saint Joseph's with first pitch slated for noon.
