ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – A nine-run sixth inning launched the St. Bonaventure baseball team to a 12-2 victory over rival Niagara Tuesday afternoon at Handler Park.
St. Bonaventure collected seven hits in their most productive inning, blowing open what was a 3-2 ballgame entering the frame. The Bonnies scored on singles from Jack Putney, Matthew Williams and Thomas Grilli before Jackson DeJohn doubled for a 9-2 advantage. Garrett Boldt dropped a single down the left field line to get Bona into double digits and then Danny Manion destroyed a one-strike delivery for a two-run homer well over the left field fence to cap off the uprising.
Niagara jumped out to a fourth inning lead with a pair of runs, but the Bonnies would immediately respond.
DeJohn walked to set the table in the home half and the Bonnies would follow with three doubles, first from Boldt and then run-scoring hits to the gaps from Connor Mays and Putney. Combine those smashes with an RBI groundout from Manion and the Bonnies surged ahead, 3-2, after four frames to set the stage for the sixth inning fireworks.
Kyle Caringi got the win on the hill with five innings of five-hit ball, allowing only one earned run with a career-high eight strikeouts.
Mays and Putney each drilled three hits apiece and the Bonnies finished with 14 in total.
Adam Shaffer threw a scoreless inning with a strikeout and DeJohn tossed a scoreless frame in the ninth.
The Bonnies get back to Atlantic 10 play with a three-game home series vs. Dayton beginning Friday afternoon.
